Job DescriptionUtility Operator 2 operates, maintains and repairs black and clean utility systems. This position is also responsible for monitoring mechanical and electrical equipment, power distribution, chilled water, process gas, domestic and de‑ionized water, water for injection (WFI), clean steam generator and distribution, plant steam boilers, compressed air, fire alarm, security, remote building equipment monitoring, sanitary, acid waste and storm drain systems.
Additionally, this role performs daily monitoring of the tank farm, supports lab admin building, building management system (BMS) and critical alarm response.
- Operate and monitor utility systems, including compressed gases, cooling towers, plant steam, chillers, boilers, HVAC, fire alarm system and utilities tank farm.
- Monitor equipment performance, conduct routine maintenance, troubleshoot issues and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Assist with analyzing data to identify areas of improvement, implement energy‑saving measures and optimise utility usage to minimise costs and environmental impact.
- Perform basic and complex preventive maintenance on utility equipment.
- Respond to equipment failures promptly.
- Respond to emergency conditions such as power outages, fire alarms and critical equipment alarms.
- Operate and monitor site building management system (BMS) and Delta V.
- Perform and monitor chemical levels of boiler feed water, cooling tower water and plant steam, adjusting water chemistry to maintain pre‑established parameters.
- Monitor and operate the site’s waste neutralisation system.
- Monitor and maintain compressed gas inventory.
- Ensure utility systems and operations comply with relevant regulation standards and guidelines.
- Maintain accurate records and implement corrective actions to address non‑compliance issues.
- Participate in cross‑department meetings and provide technical expertise, as directed.
- Assist colleagues with the implementation of process improvements under the direction of a senior technician or supervisor.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimise utility operations, reduce costs and enhance efficiency.
- Manage the inventory of spare parts and equipment.
- Provide guidance and mentor operators.
- Provide input for the development of safety procedures.
- Support site operations and emergency work orders during off‑hours, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
- Ability to operate hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of control systems.
- Effective communication, both written and oral.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodologies or other continuous improvement techniques.
- Must be able to support a 24/7 manufacturing facility, including shift, on‑call and weekends.
- High School Diploma/GED.
- 2–4 years of experience in Utility Operations or a related field.
- Associate degree in mechanical, electrical, applied engineering or industrial technology.
- Prior utility operations experience in a pharmaceutical manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Experience with data tracking software such as Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Experience using Microsoft Office.
- Lean Six Sigma certification.
Physical Requirements
- May work in mechanical/production spaces that may require hearing protection and enrolment in a hearing conservation programme.
- Will work in environments operating a motor vehicle or Powered Industrial Truck.
- May be required to operate a pallet jack.
