Utility Operator 3 operates, maintains, and repairs black and clean utility systems. The role monitors mechanical/electrical equipment, power distribution, chilled water, gas, domestic and de‑ionized water, WFI, clean steam, boilers, compressed air, fire alarm, security, remote building equipment monitoring, sanitary, acid waste, and storm drain systems. It also performs daily monitoring of tank farm, supports lab admin building, BMS, and critical alarm response, serving as primary contact for all alarms in the control room.

What

You’ll Do
  • Operate various utility systems, including compressed gases, cooling towers, plant steam, chillers, boilers, HVAC, fire alarm system, and utilities tank farm
  • Monitors equipment performance; conducts routine maintenance, troubleshoots issues, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards
  • Monitors utility consumption and ensures efficient usage of electricity, water, steam, and gas
  • Analyze data to identify areas of improvement, implement energy‑saving measures, and optimize utility usage to minimize costs and environmental impact
  • Perform routine inspections of utility equipment and systems to identify potential issues or maintenance requests
  • Conduct basic and complex preventive maintenance on utility equipment, such as lubrication, filter replacement, and cleaning to ensure equipment reliability and minimize downtime
  • Respond to equipment failures and emergencies promptly to troubleshoot issues and ensure continuous operations of utility systems
  • Respond to emergency conditions, such as power outages, fire alarms, and critical equipment alarms
  • Operate and monitor site BMS and Delta V
  • Ensure utility systems and operations comply with GMP, OSHA, and other environmental regulations and standards
  • Monitor and operate the site’s waste neutralization system
  • Monitors and maintains compressed gas inventory
  • Follow SOPs and document incidents reported by Utility Mechanics and operators
  • Maintain accurate records, conduct audits, and implement corrective actions to address non‑compliance issues
  • Participate in cross‑department meetings, provide technical expertise, and assist colleagues with implementation of process improvements
  • Identify and participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize utility operations, reduce costs, and enhance efficiencies
  • Manage the inventory of spare parts and equipment
  • Provide guidance and mentors operators
  • Participate in the development and implementation of safety procedures
  • Support site operations and emergency work orders during off‑hours, as needed
  • Remain up to date on the latest technology, industry trends, and best practices
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • Knowledge of control systems
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Strong leadership and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodologies or other continuous improvement techniques
  • Ability to support a 24/7 manufacturing facility, including shift, on‑call and weekends
Required Skills
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 4–6 years of experience in Utility Operations or a related field
  • Experience with data tracking software, such as Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
Preferred Skills
  • Associate degree in mechanical, electrical, applied engineering, or industrial technology
  • Prior utility operations experience in a pharmaceutical manufacturing or industrial environment
  • Experience using Microsoft Office
Working Conditions &

Physical Requirements
  • May work in mechanical/production spaces that may require hearing protection and enrollment in a hearing conservation program
  • Will work in environments operating a motor vehicle or powered industrial truck
  • May be required to operate a pallet jack
  • Ability to discern audible cues
  • Ability to inspect or perform a task with 20/20 corrected vision, including distinguishing color
  • Ability to ascend or descend ladders, scaffolding, ramps, etc.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time – up to 60 minutes
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time – up to 60 minutes
  • Ability to conduct activities using repetitive motions that include wrists, hands and/or fingers
  • Ability to operate machinery and/or power tools
  • Ability to conduct work that includes moving objects up to 33 pounds
  • Ability to bend, push or pull, reach to retrieve materials from 18 in to 60 in in height, and use twisting motions
