Responsibilities- Under the direct supervision of the Director of the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS), assist all HCC students through CAPS tutoring, writing, ESL, and math centers.
- Facilitate study groups and skills workshops on an ongoing basis.
- Assist HCC students in content‑related material, including a review of syllabi with students to clarify assignments and expectations.
- Assist with specialized academic programs such as Supplemental Instruction, Gateway‑to‑College and Early College.
- Understand the course content and engage students in active learning to set the foundation for tutoring and identify the student’s needs.
- Help students interpret course content by breaking down complex concepts into simpler terms.
- Model or teach study skills, time management, note‑taking, and test‑taking to teach students how to learn effectively.
- Work with students on a one‑to‑one or small‑group basis to provide individualized attention, identify strengths and weaknesses, and provide feedback.
- Understand each student’s learning style and adapt tutoring accordingly.
- Help students become independent learners by teaching them how to learn independently and encouraging ownership of their learning.
- Assist in record keeping by tracking student progress and maintaining accurate records with detailed notes.
- Become proficient in the software used for instruction to guide students as needed.
- Help students integrate information technology within the given area by teaching them how to use technology to enhance their learning.
- Assistive Technology Center support for students with disabilities, identifying appropriate assistive technology tools.
- Identify and use resources to support student learning and provide guidance on their use.
- Attend scheduled meetings or workshops to stay up‑to‑date on best practices in tutoring.
- Communicate with the instructor to review tutorial services and align with course objectives, providing feedback and recommendations for improvement.
- Communicate with other resources such as ESL staff, Math, and Writing Coordinators to support students and collaborate.
- Explore online tutoring as a resource, identify appropriate online tutoring tools, and provide guidance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalency, no degree.
- One (1) to Two (2) semesters as a college student.
- Ability to work well with a diverse student population.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
$15.00 per hour – Anticipated
