The Power Plant Manager is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and oversight of the power plant and associated systems, ensuring a safe, reliable, and energy‑efficient environment.
Assist the Director of Facilities & Engineering in the operation of the power plant and equipment within acceptable environmental compliance limits. Ensure that the safety standards as determined by the Department of Higher Education, Department of Capital Asset Maintenance and Management (DCAMM), and other state entities are met.
Duties and Responsibilities- Operate and monitor boilers, generators, and other power plant equipment.
- Maintain optimal efficiency and safety of the power plant systems.
- Conduct regular inspections and document operational data.
- Ensure the generator is properly functioning.
- Order fuel oil, chemicals, and supplies for plant and mechanical room systems.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic equipment as needed.
- Coordinate with vendors and contractors for specialized repairs or upgrades.
- Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations, including the Department of Labor.
- Schedule and oversee annual and semi-annual inspections for pressure vessels and other state and federal requirements.
- Maintain proper records for inspections, certifications, and repairs.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and emissions standards.
- Respond promptly to equipment failures.
- Participate in drills and maintain readiness for emergency situations.
- Maintain accurate records of daily operations, maintenance activities, and system performance.
- Provide regular reports to supervisors and recommend improvements or upgrades.
- Manage the Utility Plant Operators roles.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- 3–5 years of experience in steam plant or utility plant operations, including at least 3 years as an operating engineer.
- Current Massachusetts Second Class or higher Stationary Engineer’s License (required).
- Proven supervisory or lead experience with plant staff or maintenance personnel.
- Strong technical, mechanical, and problem‑solving skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field – or equivalent combination of licensing and hands‑on management experience.
- Experience supervising a three‑shift power plant operation.
- The position is primarily located within the power plant, with occasional work in other facilities across the site.
- Requires on‑call availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Involves various physical activities such as climbing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, sitting, walking, fingering, talking, and hearing.
- Includes lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling light objects up to 10 pounds.
- Exposed to internal environmental conditions, but protected from weather to some extent.
The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform tasks such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects and small parts; using measurement devices; and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at close distances.
