Starting salary is $67,000 or higher, DOE. Applicants who meet the qualifications listed below will qualify for higher rates of pay based on experience. Residency requirement: live within 15 minute response drive time to Fire Station 1.
Schedule:
24 hours on 48 hours off (56 hour/week). Must pass drug screening, physical exam, background check, annual physical, fit test, and meet physical ability requirements for Firefighter and EMT as defined in policy.
- Perform firefighting activities including driving apparatus, operating pumps, laying hose, and fire combat, containment, extinguishment.
- Perform vehicle readiness checks, equipment inventories, and related tasks.
- Administer Basic Life Support and provide emergency aid and rescue activities.
- Participate in fire drills, attend training classes in firefighting, EM, hazardous materials, etc.
- Receive and relay fire calls and alarms, operate radio and other communication equipment, keep logs as required.
- Participate in inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.
- Maintain fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities; perform minor repairs; return equipment to full service.
- Perform general maintenance work: clean and wash walls and floors; care for grounds; wash, polish, maintain, test apparatus and equipment.
- Assist in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities.
- Perform salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
- Serve on various employee committees.
- Assist with the Fire Departments information management system: enter and maintain records, billing information, emergency service reports, training records, statistics.
- Perform other duties as required.
- One year of experience with emergency services or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of modern office procedures and computer software programs; excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Working knowledge of driver safety and Basic Life Support Care.
- Ability to learn operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment.
- Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training, or station maintenance activities.
- Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations; follow verbal and written instructions; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and general public.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must be a State of Alaska Certified Firefighter 1 (preference for Firefighter
2). - Must be a Certified State of Alaska EMT 1 (preference for advanced level of care certifications).
- Must have or be able to obtain within one month a CEVO or EVOC certification for Fire and EMS vehicles.
- Must be willing to learn and demonstrate a positive attitude.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver’s license with a CDL preferred.
- Must be a United States citizen or naturalized citizen.
- Must pass a physical examination and drug urinalysis test.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony or have disqualifying criminal histories in the past seven years.
- Must endure a personal, professional, and a moral background investigation to determine honesty, maturity, and dependability.
- Must be able to work shift work and attend additional job specific training as scheduled.
- Must be fluent in the English language; bilingual applicants are preferred.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 12 months of employment the State of Alaska Advanced Life Support certification.
- Must successfully pass the State of Alaska FADO certification course within 12 months of employment.
