Position: Firefighter/ Basic Emergency Responder or Firefighter/ ALS EMT/ Driver Operator

Firefighter/ Basic Emergency Medical Responder

The City of Homer is accepting applications for a full‑time position as a Firefighter/Basic Emergency Responder or as a Firefighter/ALS EMT/Driver Operator. Starting salary for Firefighter/Basic Emergency Responder is $67,000 or higher, DOE, with attractive benefits.

Applicants who meet the qualifications listed below for Firefighter/ALS EMT/Driver Operator will qualify for higher rates of pay based on experience.

Residency Requirement

Employees of the Homer Volunteer Fire Department are required to live within a 15 minute maximum response/drive time to Fire Station 1.

Schedule

Employees will work 24 hours on and 48 hours off (56 hour/week schedule).

Pre‑Employment Screening

Successful applicants must pass pre‑employment drug screening, an NPFA approved physical examination, and a comprehensive background investigation. Must be able to annually pass the physical exam, fit test, and meet the physical ability requirements for a Firefighter and EMT as defined in Homer Fire Department policy.

General Functions

Multifaceted position that responds to emergency calls as a Firefighter-Basic Life Support EMT.

Job Functions and Major Activities
  • Perform firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
  • Perform vehicle readiness checks, equipment inventories and other related task.
  • Perform emergency aid and rescue activities including administering Basic Life support and providing other assistance as required.
  • Participate in fire drills, attend classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
  • Receive and relay fire calls and alarms. Operate radio and other communication equipment and keep logs as required.
  • Participate in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.
  • Maintain fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Perform minor repairs to departmental equipment and return equipment to full service following any use.
  • Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; clean and wash walls and floors; care for grounds around station; make minor repairs; wash and dry hose; wash, clean, polish, maintain and test apparatus and equipment.
  • Assist in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities.
  • Perform salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
  • Serve on various employee committees.
  • Perform a wide range of clerical duties. Assist with the Fire Departments information management system. Enter and maintain records, billing information, emergency service reports, training records, statistics.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • One year of experience with emergency services or equivalent combination of experience/education.
    • Working knowledge of modern office procedures and use of computers and software programs. Requires excellent organizational and communication skills.
    • Working knowledge of driver safety; working knowledge of Basic Life Support Care.
    • Ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment.
    • Ability to learn to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques.
    • Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke.
    • Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
    • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
    • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.
    • Ability to meet the other requirements listed below.
