Job summary
This is a full time Consultant post within the Department of Ophthalmology and the successful candidate will work with existing substantive Consultants to provide a comprehensive service for Ophthalmology patients. This post is based at the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital and includes duties at Moorfields, Bedford Hospital.
This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic and energetic Ophthalmologist to play a key role across multi-disciplinary teams focussed on further developing efficient and safe pathways. The key service priorities that the role will actively support are strategic planning for the future of elective recovery and digitalisation of Ophthalmology processes.
The successful candidate will have demonstrable specialist knowledge and skills in Ophthalmology with a subspecialty focus on Oculoplastics with a subspecialty interest in orbital and thyroid eye disease and Adnexal Cancer. We are looking for a candidate who is flexible about ways of working and keen to work as part of a multi-professional team to deliver high quality care. In particular, the post holder should have an innovative approach to the elective pathway supporting with flexible cross cover of lists, the implementation of high volume low complexity lists and other improvements to patient care.
Main duties of the job Maintain the highest clinical standards in the Ophthalmology management of all patients. Actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit. Regular contribution to departmental meetings, Journal club and Medical Grand rounds of the hospital. Have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD) appraisal and revalidation. Be required to provide a senior level of support to the department.
Provide outpatient clinics which may be supported by junior staff. To provide supervision and support to the MDT. There will be administrative duties such as letter dictations and approvals, following up on patient results, discharge letters and other clinical paperwork. Outpatient correspondence should be received by the referrer and patient within 7 days. Electronic Discharge Letters (EDLs) following an admission, such as for surgery, should be completed within 24 hours.
Assess and manage where appropriate patients with a range of eye conditions across the Ophthalmology sub-specialties including acute / general Ophthalmology.
