Fire Investigator – Oahu (Req ) –

Hiring Range: $87,400.00 – $
Lead investigator for fire incidents across Hawaiian Electric’s service territories. Conduct ground and aerial field analyses to determine fire origin and cause. Oversee compliance and wildfire mitigation activities to prevent ignition events. Collaborate with stakeholders to assess root causes and determine company attributability.
Essential Functions- Site Investigations
- Collect, document, and preserve evidence to determine ignition sources.
- Coordinate with first responders to gather time‑sensitive information.
- Conduct confidential investigations in compliance with company policies and regulations.
- Apply fire investigation and civil investigation methodologies.
- Interview witnesses, property owners, engineers, and emergency personnel.
- Represent the company at fire and emergency incidents.
- Act as Ignition Management Manager when required.
- Reporting and Documentation
- Research, analyze, and compile data to produce detailed reports on fire investigations.
- Prepare comprehensive documentation to identify systemic issues contributing to ignition events.
- Support analysis of utility equipment failure modes for operational decisions.
- Training & Development
- Develop and deliver fire safety education and disaster preparedness programs.
- Create informational materials and conduct presentations for schools, community groups, and public events.
- Participate in professional development related to fire science and prevention.
- Emergency Response
- Provide rotational on‑call support, including 24/7 availability for serious incidents across service territories.
- Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Engineering, Criminal Justice, or related field.
- Working knowledge of fire investigation techniques, relevant laws, regulations, and codes.
- Proficiency with spreadsheets, word processing, and safety manuals.
- Demonstrated technical expertise in fire investigation, prevention, or utility operations.
- Ability to work in hazardous environments.
- Strong legal and regulatory knowledge.
- Adaptability in high‑pressure, dynamic environments.
- Discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive issues.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
- Strong analytical skills for research and reporting.
- Effective written, oral, and presentation communication.
- Strong interpersonal skills and discretion.
- Willingness to travel to service territories for extended wildland fire investigations.
- Qualified for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet driving position standards.
- Wildland Fire Origin & Cause Investigation Determination (FI-210) – upon hire (preferred).
- Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) or Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) – upon hire (preferred).
- 8+ years of related experience in fire investigations or utility/fire industry.
- 1 year of progressively responsible experience in fire‑prevention activities, fire inspections, life safety planning, or related functions.
