Position: BUILDING CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR III - KONA, HAWAII ISLAND

Salary: $6,481 to $7,056 per month (SR-21, Step C to I) - Salary includes Related Shortage Category Differential.

This position assists an Engineer in the administration of building construction and other contracts;
supervises inspectors of a lower grade; reviews plans and specifications; and represents an Engineer during inspection of minor projects and performs other related duties as assigned.

This position also performs inspections involving substantial complexities, e.g. inspects various aspects of multi-story and or multi-million-dollar structures that are constructed by a variety of private builders. Works with the engineer-in-charge and builders to identify and ensure correction of deficiencies, to interpret and explain State requirements, and to resolve problems such as unauthorized deviations from approved plans and specifications. Inspects structures involving complex construction problems, e.g. the installation and testing of complex and sophisticated electrical and mechanical systems in a large multistory, special purpose building.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Legal Authorization to Work Requirement: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

Basic Experience/

Education:

Work experience which involved tasks that demonstrated the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions; write simply and directly, and perform arithmetic computations.

General

Experience:


TWO (2) YEARS of JOURNEY LEVEL experience in the building construction trades, which demonstrated knowledge of the full range of specialized knowledge, skills, abilities and practices used in such trades, including knowledge of building construction methods and materials and safety requirements and practices, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.

Experience:


TWO (2) YEARS of either:

  • A. Building construction inspection work experience; or
  • B. Supervisory work experience,
    over a force of skilled trades workers in the building construction industry that involved responsibility for interpreting plans and specifications and inspecting the quality of workmanship and materials for adherence to such plans and specifications.

Driver's License: Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment

Lift and Carry: Applicants must be able to lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted.
