COMMUNITY

Moanalua High School is located on the outskirts of metropolitan Honolulu on the rim of Salt Lake crater, a community comprised of over 37,000 residents. The median household income of residents is $71,065 and about 28% of the community has earned a college degree. Moanalua High School is one of six public high schools in the HIDOE’s Central District and serves a diverse population that encompasses all socioeconomic backgrounds and ethnic groups including Filipino, Japanese, Caucasian, Chinese, Korean, African
- American, Hawaiian/part-Hawaiian, Samoan, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander backgrounds.

SCHOOL

Moanalua High School was established in September 1972 and graduated its first class in May 1975. Moanalua High School is part of the Hawaii State Department of Education and received full accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and College. Moanalua last underwent an accreditation in 2018 and received the maximum accreditation of six years.

At Moanalua High School, our vision is a community where everyone encourages, creates, and learns and it is our mission to prepare students to responsibly create their future. Current enrollment is 2,102 students in grades 9-12 and approximately 24% of the student body is represented by dependents of military personnel (including Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard) who reside in neighboring military housing.

22% of our students qualify for the free/reduced lunch program.

CURRICULUM

A comprehensive curriculum is offered to Moanalua High School students. Curriculum offerings include: college preparatory courses, Advanced Placement (AP) courses, Career
- Technical Education (CTE) pathways, English Language Learner (ELL) pathways, a Comprehensive School Alienation Program, coteaching and integrated support for special education students. Students register for seven periods per semester and each class meets three times a week for approximately 200 minutes per week. Students must meet for 60-minute classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays and on Thursdays and Fridays, students attend 75-minute classes.

Each semester is 18 weeks.

Minimum Qualifications

The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree.

If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB).

It is your responsibility to ensure the program you have enrolled is aligned with the teaching line you are hired in.

Upon hire you will need to have a valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit. You may apply for your Hawaii teaching license on the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board Website.
