This position is created specifically to support the Kaho iwai :
Reclaiming Hawaiian Knowledge Sovereignty project. To begin approximately January 2026 pending position clearance and/or availability of funds. The position is located at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and is renewable annually for the duration of the grant contingent upon availability of funds program/operational needs satisfactory performance and good academic standing.
Note: This is an I I-month position which means the position is on duty throughout the year except during periods of authorized leave.
Duties & Responsibilities Enhancing library catalog records- Assists with improving the discoverability of Hawaiian Collection materials in UHM Librarys catalog One Search by analyzing discoverability of catalog records and creating new discovery access points via the table of contents and description catalog record fields
- Reviews and transcribes the table of contents of humanities-based Hawaiian Collection materials in preparation for the cataloger to update the catalog record
- Reviews and writes brief descriptions of humanities-based Hawaiian Collection materials for the cataloger to update the catalog record
- Updates existing and/or develops new workflows and/or procedures
- Trains and supervises student assistants III, IV and V in workflows and procedures
- Assists with Hawaiian and Pacific Collections in-person and remote reference services
- Develops an understanding of the Hawaiian & Pacific Collections the research the collections support and the patrons the collection serves
- May assist librarians in creating and maintaining research guides, indexes and finding tools
- May assist librarians in library instruction and outreach
- May assist librarians in collection development and management
- Enrolled full-time at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in a graduate degree program at the time of hire and throughout the appointment period
- In good academic standing and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 or above
- Pursuing a graduate degree in Library & Information Science or a related field
- Knowledge of and/or experience enhancing library records to improve discoverability
- Knowledge of and/or experience using the Library’s online catalog One Search
- Experience providing in-person, email and/or phone reference services
- Knowledge of Hawaiian history, culture and/current events
- Knowledge of Pacific Islands histories, cultures and/or current events
- Keen attention to detail and ability to synthesize information
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
- Ability to work collaboratively
- Demonstrated experience in Google and Word software
- Demonstrated accuracy & dependability in performing work assignments
- Ability to perform duties with little supervision after completion of training
- Proficiency in the Hawaiian language, a Pacific Islands language or a non-Indigenous language of Hawaii or the Pacific islands.
- Knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards
