Job Overview
Switching Coordinator – professional role in Hawaiian Electric Companies Transmission Operations on Oahu. Responsible for creating and coordinating switching orders to provide safe electrical work environment for personnel, customers, and public.
Responsibilities- Develop switching orders for scheduled clearances per holdoff requests, outages, and company safety protocols.
- Coordinate with departments and contractors to notify customers and stakeholders of required scheduled switching, service interruption, or equipment replacement.
- Notify Generation Department and independent power producers of special generation requirements due to line switching and abnormal system conditions.
- Evaluate system and customer equipment to determine safe scheduling of clearances and act as liaison between customers and the company for large customer services.
- Coordinate energizing of new equipment ensuring necessary requirements are met for service entry.
- Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned.
Basic Knowledge Requirements
- Completion of a Trouble man or Lineman Apprenticeship Program or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of generating procedures and transmission/distribution system.
- Working knowledge of personal computer applications (spreadsheets, word processing).
- Knowledge of Safety & Health Manual, General Information Manual, company/union agreements.
- Knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and Safe Start principles.
Skills Requirements
- Read and interpret distribution/transmission maps and single line diagrams.
- Valid State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet hiring standards for driving positions.
- Excellent oral and written communication; strong interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility and ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
- Handle difficult or sensitive issues with tact and discretion.
Experience Requirements
- 3–5 years experience in Operations, Transmission, and Distribution utility field.
- 3–5 years experience as System Operation Shift Supervisor or Load Dispatcher or equivalent.
