Position: Wildfire Mitigation Planning Engineer / Senior Wildfire Mitigation Planning Engineer - Oahu

WILDFIRE MITIGATION PLANNING ENGINEER

Provides strategic, engineering, analytical, and electric‑system asset related support for the development of wildfire mitigation initiatives under Hawaiian Electric’s Wildfire Safety Strategy (WSS). Develops high‑level scope and strategy for wildfire mitigation programs, projects, and operational initiatives, applying system design and equipment specifications to inform risk‑reduction benefit evaluation techniques and model results.

Essential Functions
  • Define and develop wildfire initiative scope and strategy under guidance of the Wildfire Mitigation Planning Supervisor.
  • Support prioritization frameworks by assessing design, feasibility, cost, risk‑reduction value, and other criteria to reduce wildfire risks.
  • Maintain a centralized repository of scoped initiatives tied to WSS goals.
  • Monitor and support scope implementation; escalates deviations to cost, scope, or prioritization conflicts.
  • Benchmark ongoing wildfire mitigation techniques and technologies across the utility industry.
  • Develop methodology to apply risk‑informed analysis ensuring cost‑effective risk reduction of grid hardening and operational improvements.
  • Lead strategic development of 1–3 year roadmaps supporting specific scope and timing of wildfire initiatives with clear linkages to strategic objectives and targeted risk reductions.
  • WSS Portfolio and Performance
    • Monitor mitigation effectiveness and system performance of completed projects and initiatives.
    • Monitor ongoing reliability and ignition performance improvements, proposing adjustments that reflect operational feasibility, risk‑reduction optimization, and regulatory compliance.
    • Prepare data and analysis materials to gain consensus on wildfire mitigation strategy and scoping decisions across Hawaiian Electric’s governance meetings and external stakeholder engagements.
    • Support regulatory compliance by providing subject‑matter expertise for preparing and reviewing regulatory filings and information‑request responses related to electric‑system engineering and asset performance.
    • Recommend adjustments to project planning frameworks and scoping processes to support WSS Continuous Improvement.
  • Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such response.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Working knowledge of distribution and transmission system design and operation.
  • Working knowledge of industry wildfire mitigation plans and of applying mitigation plans that address risk reduction, work prioritization, and benefit‑cost analysis.
  • Understanding of wildfire risk across Hawaiian Electric’s territories, including regulatory, technical, operational, and public‑facing dimensions.
  • Familiarity with project feasibility, cost‑benefit analysis, and prioritization techniques.

    Skilled in grid‑related applications including visualization and project management tools, as well as standard applications such as Smartsheet, Excel, and SharePoint.

    Ability to create and interpret trends, models, forecasts, and simulations.
  • Computer Applications:
