Wildfire Risk Engineer / Senior Wildfire Risk Engineer – Oahu
Position Overview:
The Hawaiian Electric Company seeks a qualified Wildfire Risk Engineer and a Senior Wildfire Risk Engineer to develop, validate, and apply advanced wildfire risk models to support strategic planning, regulatory reporting, and mitigation program implementation.
- Develop, maintain, and streamline quantitative wildfire risk models, incorporating system asset characteristics, performance data, geospatial, and forecast information.
- Conduct risk analysis, including ignition risk evaluation, reliability impact assessment, fire spread modeling, and probability/consequence calculations, under various system conditions (e.g., PSPS events, extreme weather).
- Integrate GIS and spatial data into risk models, supporting regional vulnerability assessment and updating risk maps with new data inputs.
- Validate and document modeling inputs, assumptions, outputs, and methodologies; ensure audit‑readiness of risk data sets.
- Translate complex risk analysis into actionable insights for the Wildfire Strategy team, enabling WSS refinement and implementation.
- Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned, including preparation for emergency response operations.
- Working knowledge of distribution and transmission grid design and operation.
- Experience in quantitative risk modeling, wildfire risk assessment, and mitigation planning (5–7 years).
- Proficiency with Python, Excel, GIS, and statistical tools; familiarity with asset performance data and utility risk frameworks.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical insights to strategy, compliance, and regulatory stakeholders.
- Ability to synthesize complex datasets and manage large, complex data sets related to wildfire and grid analysis.
- Master’s degree preferred; bachelor’s degree in data science, engineering, environmental science, or related field.
- Extensive (8+ years) experience in quantitative risk modeling, preferably in a utility or emergency management setting.
- Demonstrated experience with GIS, scenario forecasting, and automation of risk analysis workflows.
- Proficiency in statistical modeling, quantitative risk methods, and machine learning techniques.
- Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills; ability to communicate complex topics across strategy, compliance, and operations teams.
