Primary Responsibilities
  • HDR is looking for Regional Transit Planning Practice Leaders to complement our Transportation Planning Business Class and Transit Market Sector. The role supports a broader practice strategy and technical excellence across transit planning disciplines.
  • Collaborate with HDR’s Transit Planning Practice Leader to identify global and local needs within the practice, industry trends, required skills, and emerging markets to develop and advance a practice group strategy.
  • Coordinate within each region to identify market drivers and develop products that meet client needs.
  • Present regional transit planning activities and needs on regular Transit Planning Practice Group calls.
  • Contribute to the technical development of transit planning staff in areas including policy, systems/network planning, corridor planning and development, operations and safety, funding, and related transit modes (paratransit, fixed route, demand response, express bus, BRT, light rail, commuter rail, intercity rail, etc.).
  • Identify market opportunities in coordination with Area Business Development Leaders and develop winning pursuit strategies.
  • Attract and retain transit planning staff by identifying industry talent in collaboration with Area and Corporate leadership.
  • Lead workshare communications that promote technical excellence and increased utilization.
  • Serve as a project manager for major transit projects, delivering quality work on time and meeting client expectations.
  • Represent HDR at state and regional professional organizations.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Engineering, or related discipline (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in transit planning, with breadth across multiple transit planning areas.
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic plans related to team-building, skills development, or business development.
  • Professional registration such as AICP, PE, PTOE, PTP, or PMP preferred.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in transportation planning.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills; understanding of transit planning principles.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team; strong multi-project management and personnel management capabilities.
  • Solid business development skills; ability to relate to clients and present effectively.
