Responsibilities
  • Create, explore, evaluate, design, and share solutions and validate their predicted performance to resolve problems, conditions, and issues.
  • Apply a depth of knowledge acquired through an intensive learning regimen of engineering phenomena, theories, and concepts.
  • Understand theories, concepts, principles, and their interrelationships underlying professional engineering practices to improve work efficiency and quality.
  • Identify, analyze, advise, consult, and report on scientific, theoretical, and factual data, conditions, and problems.
  • Assess, resolve, and predict the relationships and interactions of data and findings under varying conditions.
  • Obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty; failure to do so may result in withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Travel as required, including to CONUS and OCONUS, on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
  • Provide immediate and continuing support in key/emergency-essential roles to ensure the success of combat operations or the availability of combat‑essential systems.
  • Work in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present; participate in medical surveillance programs.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
  • New employees to the Department of the Navy must successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
  • Applicants retired from the military within 180 days immediately following retirement may be subject to 5 U.S.C. § 3326 provisions.
  • Males born after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service.
Qualifications (by GS grade)
  • GS‑05:
    Successful completion of the basic education requirement.
  • GS‑07:
    One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑05 or a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement, or a combination of education and experience.
  • GS‑09:
    One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑07, or a master’s or equivalent graduate degree, or two years of progressively higher‐level graduate education leading to a master’s.
  • GS‑11:
    One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑09, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three years of progressively higher‐level graduate education leading to a Ph.D.
  • GS‑12:
    One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑11, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or a combination of education and experience.
Education
  • Degree:
    Engineering from a BA‑ABET accredited program or equivalent coursework covering statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electrical fields, and circuits.
  • Combination of education and experience:
    College‑level training and/or technical experience furnishing a thorough knowledge of physical and mathematical sciences and engineering applications.
  • Professional registration or licensure:
    Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the U.S., the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
  • Written test:
    Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or equivalent written test required for professional registration.
  • Specified academic courses:
    Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences, including the courses specified above.
  • Related curriculum:
    Completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific field (e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology) with at least one year of professional engineering experience.

Vacancies may be filled at any grade level listed. The position is subject to an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
