Job Overview
  • Role: Professional – Wildfire Mitigation Planning Engineer or Senior Wildfire Mitigation Planning Engineer (whichever level best matches qualifications)
  • Number of Vacancies: 3
  • Responsibilities: Provide strategic, engineering, analytical, and electric‑system asset support for developing wildfire mitigation initiatives under Hawaiian Electric’s Wildfire Safety Strategy (WSS). Duties include scope development, prioritization, strategy formulation, portfolio performance management, regulatory compliance, and emergency response support.
  • Primary Functions:
    • Define and develop wildfire initiative scope and strategy under guidance of the Wildfire Mitigation Planning Supervisor.
    • Develop risk‑informed analyses to support cost‑effective risk reduction and grid hardening decisions.
    • Maintain a centralized repository of scoped initiatives tied to WSS goals.
    • Monitor and support scope implementation, escalating deviations related to cost, scope, or prioritization conflicts.
    • Benchmark ongoing mitigation techniques and technologies to inform WSS development.
    • Prepare data and analysis materials for governance and stakeholder engagement.
    • Provide subject‑matter expertise on regulatory filings and compliance related to asset performance.
    • Participate in Company emergency response activities as required.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
    • Working knowledge of distribution and transmission system design and operation.
    • Understanding of industry wildfire mitigation plans and benefit‑cost analysis techniques.
    • Familiarity with project feasibility, cost‑benefit analysis, and prioritization techniques.
    • Insight into wildfire risk across Hawaiian Electric’s territories, including regulatory and operational dimensions.
  • Skills Requirements:
    • Strategic planning – develop multi‑year work plans.
    • Scope development – define and communicate wildfire‑related scope.
    • Cross‑functional coordination – collaborate with internal and external teams.
    • Technical proficiency – use grid‑related tools (e.g., visualization, project management, Smartsheet, Excel, SharePoint).
    • Critical thinking and decision making – analyze complex, incomplete, or conflicting information.
    • Analytical – create and interpret trends, models, forecasts, and simulations.
    • Computer applications – Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
    • Communication – articulate ideas clearly and concisely.
    • Teamwork – function effectively in a team environment.
    • Conflict resolution and negotiation – resolve conflicts and develop alternative solutions.
    • Interpersonal – build effective relationships with stakeholders.
  • Experience Requirements:
    • For the Wildfire Mitigation Planning Engineer: 5–7 years of experience in utility planning, scope development, or strategic project support.
    • For the Senior Wildfire Mitigation Engineer: 8+ years of experience in utility planning, scope development, or strategic project support.
    • Preferred experience in regulatory reporting or compliance documentation.
Compensation
  • Wildfire Mitigation Planning Engineer – $97,900 – $125,000 per year.
  • Senior Wildfire Mitigation Engineering – $107,700 – $139,800 per year.
