The Philanthropy Grant Writer is responsible for researching, writing and editing grant proposals to secure funding from individuals, corporations and foundations in support of the Hawai‘i and Palmyra business unit, division and global conservation priorities. This role also manages programmatic and financial reporting for all private grants received. The ideal candidate understands tropical marine and forest/terrestrial conservation issues well enough to work effectively with program staff and present project and scientific information in easily understandable, clear English.
This position will report to the Donor Communications and Engagement Specialist.
The Grant Writer works with fundraising, conservation, science, legal, finance and communications staff to develop grant proposals, reports and budgets and to monitor all uses of grant funds to ensure compliance with donor intent and financial requirements. The writer manages the proposal and report information gathering and writing process, sets schedules and deadlines, coordinates input from program staff, writes, edits and coordinates comments to produce high-quality proposals that help inspire donors to contribute to our work, and reports that reassure them their gifts were used wisely.
The writer works with philanthropy and program staff to monitor all activities and budgets for grant-funded programs to ensure compliance with donor intent and financial requirements. The writer achieves quality results by meeting sound proposal-writing standards, including readability, consistency, and tone, and ensures accuracy by reviewing the proposals and reports with project managers and other key sources of information. The Grant Writer is responsible for managing a database of reports and proposals and conducting research for new funding opportunities.
This position is based within Hawaii. The preferred island is Oahu and other islands within Hawaii will be considered.

- Bachelor’s degree and 5 years related experience writing, editing and proofreading, or equivalent combination.
- Experience writing compelling, high-quality fundraising grant proposals and reports, and/or newspaper or magazine reporting and writing, researching and editing.
- Experience with information-gathering, manipulating, analyzing and interpreting the data.
- Experience reviewing and tracking annual and multi-year budgets for proposals and reports.
- Experience in conducting interviews, researching and compiling information from many sources.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams.
- Knowledge of marine and forest conservation and resource management.
Qualifications:
- Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience are appreciated.
- Ability to work in partnership with others in a collaborative or advisory role.
- Demonstrated ability to conceive and write creatively for a wide variety of audiences.
- Experience developing, managing, and implementing goals, plans, and complex processes.
- Expert in current and evolving technology related to donor communications and tracking of projects.
- Proficient in interpreting guidelines and manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting data.
- Successful experience managing and implementing strategic program goals.
- Superior planning and problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of accounting practices.
