Nurse Manager, PACU – Kaiser Permanente
Plans, develops, and implements provisions of quality nursing care for efficient operation of the service area. Serves as manager, practitioner, educator, mentor, and consultant. Guides nursing leadership toward excellence in practice and serves as a role model. Supervises assigned staff.
Essential Responsibilities- Respond to patient/family complaints, serving as advocate and monitoring and coordinating patient care on a 24‑hour basis. Provide nursing consultation to unit staff, peers, other hospital personnel, adjunct staff, and nursing students and instructors.
- Respond to unit emergencies, directing staff in crisis situations and serving as nursing staff advocate. Listen to staff concerns and respond clearly, calmly, consistently, and timely. Ensure staff development and coordinate unit in‑services to meet core and unit‑focused competencies.
- Schedule and assign staff in accordance with patient care, budget guidelines, and current unit acuities; promote effective use of resources. Attend and participate in nursing department and other assigned meetings. Develop and implement plans/projects to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness; monitor and report status and progress to supervisor.
- Monitor and evaluate quality and appropriateness of patient care, quality control items, and patient satisfaction. Maintain a safe environment and track status of identified problems or areas of non‑compliance to ensure effectiveness of corrective action. Serve as resource technical expert/spokesperson in the area of specialization to assure provision of safe patient care.
- Perform patient care to the extent necessary to maintain clinical expertise, competency, and licensing required to fulfill job responsibilities and direct the provision of care on the unit. Provide direct patient care on an as‑needed basis within scope of license and in compliance with all legal, regulatory, and policy requirements.
- Incorporate the KP Nursing Vision, Model and Values throughout nursing practice.
- Hire, train, supervise, counsel, discipline, and terminate assigned staff as appropriate.
- Communicate goals, objectives, accountabilities, priorities, and authority parameters to assigned staff.
- Minimum three (3) years of clinical nursing experience relevant to the position/department.
- One (1) year supervisory experience or completion of a nurse manager fellowship within one year of hire.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing by date of hire.
- Registered Nurse License (state of license required at hire).
- Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
- National certification in specialty within one (1) year of hire and maintained thereafter, or required timeframe for new (inexperienced) nurse managers.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in adaptability, change management, decision making, detail‑oriented, customer service, influence, interpersonal relations, oral communication, prioritization, problem solving, quality management, results orientation, system thinking, teamwork, time management, and written communication competencies.
- Knowledge of Nurse Practice Act, TJC, and other local, state, and federal regulations.
- Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
- Experience with word processing, spreadsheet, and database PC applications.
- Master’s degree in nursing administration or public health administration.
