Plans, develops, and implements provisions of quality nursing care for efficient operation within the allocated service area. Serves as manager, practitioner, educator, mentor, and consultant. Guides nursing leadership toward excellence in practice and serves as a role model. Supervises assigned staff.
Responsibilities- Respond to patient/family complaints and act as advocate for patients and families. Monitor and coordinate patient care provided by nursing on a 24‑hour basis. Provide nursing consultation to unit staff, peers, other hospital personnel, adjunct staff, and nursing students and instructors.
- Respond to unit emergencies and direct staff in crisis situations. Act as nursing staff advocate, listen to staff concerns, and respond in a clear, calm, consistent, and timely manner. Ensure staff development and coordinate unit in‑services to meet identified core and unit‑focused competencies.
- Schedule and assign staff in accordance with patient care, budget guidelines, and current unit acuities. Promote effective use of resources. Attend and participate in nursing department and other assigned meetings. Develop and implement plans/projects to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness. Monitor and report status and progress to supervisor.
- Monitor and evaluate quality and appropriateness of patient care, quality control items, and patient satisfaction. Maintain a safe environment. Track status of identified problems or areas of non‑compliance to ensure effectiveness of corrective action. Serve as a technical expert/spokesperson in a specialization area to assure safe patient care.
- Perform patient care as necessary to maintain clinical expertise, competency, and licensing required to fulfill job responsibilities and direct the provision of care on the unit. Provide direct patient care on an as‑needed basis, within the scope of license and in compliance with all applicable legal, regulatory, and policy requirements.
- Incorporate the KP Nursing Vision, Model, and Values throughout nursing practice.
- Hire, train, supervise, counsel, discipline, and terminate assigned staff as appropriate.
- Communicate goals, objectives, accountabilities, priorities, and authority parameters to assigned staff.
