Position: VETERINARY PROGRAM MANAGER I (DOCTOR OF VETERINARY MEDICINE) - HALAWA TO KALIHI, OAHU

Hawaii Department of Agriculture Animal Quarantine Station Salary: $9,142 to $14,625 per month (EM-05, Minimum to Maximum)

Note:

Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors.

This position is located in the Animal Quarantine Branch, Animal Industry Division of the Department of Agriculture. The function of this branch is to support the Animal Industry Division by: a) Preventing the introduction of rabies and other diseases or pests of public health importance into the state; b) Managing the state animal quarantine station; and c) Insuring quality animal care and health services to dogs and cats confined at the animal quarantine station.

The position will function as a Veterinary Program Manager responsible for examining, on a national and international level, rabies and other diseases of public health importance of interest or concern to Hawaii. Duties and responsibilities include: providing comprehensive managerial oversight of the Rabies Quarantine Program; keeping abreast of national and international scientific advances in disease diagnosis and control, animal welfare, animal husbandry, international animal movement requirements and veterinary medicine;

establishing operating controls and oversees maintenance of animal health records; evaluating veterinary hospitals for approval to house quarantine animals; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Legal Authorization to Work:
    The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • State of Hawaii Veterinarian License: Applicants must possess either:
    1) a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Hawaii; or
    2) a valid temporary permit to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Hawaii, provided that a permanent license is obtained within the six month probationary period.
  • Veterinary

    Experience:

    Applicants must possess FOUR (4) YEARS of responsible professional veterinary medicine experience.
  • Examples of qualifying professional veterinary experience are as follows:
    Detection, eradication and control of animal diseases through diagnosis, treatment, quarantine and established testing protocol;
    Inspection of meat and meat products intended for human consumption;
    Study of the preventive control of animal diseases transmissible from animals to humans;
    Post graduate research work that has demonstrated the ability to perform independent research in the field of veterinary medicine;
    Veterinary quarantine work concerning rabies control.
  • Substitutions Allowed: A master's degree in a pertinent veterinary field from an accredited four-year college or university may be substituted for one year of Veterinary Experience; A Ph.D. degree in a pertinent veterinary field from an accredited four-year college or university may be substituted for two years of Veterinary Experience.
  • Administrative Aptitude Requirement:
    Administrative aptitude will be considered to have been met when there is strong affirmative evidence of the necessary administrative aptitudes and abilities.
  • Driver's License:
    Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
