The Department of Public Administration (College of Social Sciences) is seeking a graduate research assistant to work on its project: “Surviving the Shift: Nonprofit Responses to Institutional Changes.” The project explores how nonprofits respond to rapidly changing external and internal environments, such as decreasing stability of government funding, increasing pressures for managerialism, and shifting needs for intersect oral collaboration.

Other conditions: RTRF funds. Appointment to begin August 2025. The initial appointment is scheduled to run until May 2026. Continuation is contingent upon project needs, satisfactory work performance, academic progress, and availability of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with data collection to examine the operational characteristics and governance systems of nonprofit organizations in the states of Hawai‘i and Washington.
  • Collect survey and interview data from nonprofit leaders and staff, as well as gathering archival and administrative data from both physical and digital sources.
  • Develop and manage a contact list; recruit and support survey participants; co-develop and conduct interviews; transcribe or take detailed notes; gather archival and online organizational data.
  • Maintain a secure data management plan, log files, and storage systems; report any data issues.
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data; summarize findings; assist with research reports.
  • Support other research-related activities as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Classified, full-time (minimum 6 credits) graduate student in good academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or above) at the University of Hawaiʻi tificate and non-degree students are not eligible.
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program within the College of Social Sciences (e.g., Public Administration, Political Science, Sociology, Economics, Psychology, Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, Communication and Information) or a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Interest in and familiarity with nonprofit organizations and their operational environments.
  • Experience using tools such as Qualtrics for surveys and Atlas.ti for qualitative data analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with nonprofit leaders and staff.
  • Ability to conduct, transcribe, and document interviews accurately.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, well-organized, and able to complete tasks independently and on schedule.
  • Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience scraping web-based data using Python or R.
  • Experience analyzing administrative documents, online data, or audio/visual materials.
  • Possession of a valid U.S. driver’s license and familiarity with Hawaiʻi’s geography and local social issues.
