The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS), Water Quality Division, is looking to hire a Chemist I for their Chemical Laboratory located in Honolulu.
What You’ll Do- Test water samples for chemicals and minerals to ensure water quality and safety.
- Use a variety of lab techniques and instruments (e.g., color tests, titrations, and wet chemical methods).
- Collect water samples from different field locations, including hard‑to‑reach areas with uneven terrain.
- Investigate water quality complaints by talking with customers, testing samples, and writing reports.
- Document and report lab findings clearly, both in writing and verbally.
- Maintain lab equipment and supplies, prepare chemical solutions, and keep the lab organized.
- Stay up to date with new methods and developments in water testing and chemistry.
- Perform other assignments related to this role.
- You’ll work mainly in a lab under supervision, but will also travel to different parts of the island to collect samples in the field.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to chemicals, noxious fumes, hazardous and toxic substances while wearing appropriate safety gear.
- Must be physically able to climb, walk, and/or crawl in confined conditions and/or remote areas while carrying fifty pounds of equipment/samples.

Class Title / Salary Range / Current Pay:
Chemist ISR‑18 $ 4,590 / Chemist I ISR‑20 $ 4,961 / Chemist II ISR‑22 $ 5,369.

Education RequirementEquivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in chemistry.
SubstitutionWork experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree in chemistry on a year-for-year basis. Such work experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Education must have been completed by the time of application in order to be credited. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United States.
To receive credit, proper documentation such as a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. The hiring agency reserves the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.
Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.
