Department: 19-Sports Medicine | Status: PRN

Overview

The L/ATC shall be responsible for attending all sports activities as assigned by the Sports Medicine Coordinator, assisting team physicians as directed, maintaining written records on all athletes, and consulting with team physicians and coaches regarding injured athlete's status.

Responsibilities
  • Coverage of assigned athletic events.
  • Render treatment as outlined by physician for injured athletes.
  • Assess injured athletes and refer to physician when appropriate.
  • Communicate with coaching staff regarding athlete status and schedule changes.
  • Record progress on injured athletes on established forms.
  • Refer athletic injuries to physician for diagnosis and treatment referral.
  • Perform treatments as ordered by physician.
  • Maintain proper equipment and supplies for coverage of athletic events.
  • Maintain a positive attitude toward athletes and staff.
  • Attend/participate in department/clinic in-services.
  • Submit written incident/accident reports to Sports Medicine Coordinator as events occur.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an approved college/university.
  • Eligible/Certified through National Athletic Trainers Association/BOC.
  • Eligible/Licensed through Alabama Board of Athletic Trainers.
Physical Demands

Stands, bends, lifts, climbs, and uses significant physical motion. Must be able to stand for extended periods and walk extensively. Lifting and carrying equipment up to 50 lbs without help; over 50 lbs with assistance. Operation of electrical equipment and exposure to infectious materials. Visual acuity to perceive reactions to injury and treatment.

Patient/Athlete Care
  • Participates as a member of the health care team.
  • Transports patients, maintains records, equipment, and supplies as indicated.
  • Observes and records patient condition, reactions, and responses; reports to physician/clinical director as appropriate.
  • Accepts responsibility for the patient’s personal care and environment during treatment.
  • Follows established procedures and safety precautions in rehabilitation modalities.
  • Carries out physician-prescribed rehabilitation protocols.
  • Carries out treatment using rehabilitation equipment with proper instruction and competency.
  • Cares for braces, prostheses, and other assistive devices.
  • Assists the team physician during assessment, stabilization, and transport of injured athletes when appropriate.
Support Duties
  • Informs the supervisor of pertinent information related to Sports Medicine.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment per procedures.
  • Performs duties as assigned by Sports Medicine Coordinator and/or Clinical Director.
  • Participates in continuing education programs as appropriate.
