This role involves providing structural engineering support for all phases of capital projects at chemical plants: initial planning and scoping, detailed engineering and design, and construction.

On-Board Engineering Corp. is hiring a full time Sturctural Engineering Leader to be assigned to work at our Client's chemical manufacturing facility in Hopewell, VA. This role involves providing structural engineering support for all phases of capital projects at chemical plants: initial planning and scoping, detailed engineering and design, and construction.
Of NoteThis position is part of our dedicated and nested site operations team, which means this role will continue in perpetuity if the selected candidate’s performance meets expectations and the client’s business needs continue as expected. The ideal candidate will be looking to establish roots and stay for many years to come as an integral part of the team.
Duties & Responsibilities- Structural engineering and design for steel structures, equipment supports (pumps, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, etc.), pipe supports, pipe racks, concrete foundations for tanks / equipment, equipment pads, analysis of existing structures and foundations, underground piping, etc.
- Developing conceptual layouts, preliminary designs, and material take-offs for estimating during project scoping
- Producing calculations, designs, specifications, scopes of work, engineering packages, sketches/drawings for procurement, bidding, and construction
- Reviewing and checking vendor drawings, and other disciplines’ drawings for structural input
- Performing fieldwork to gather field data, check tie-ins, inspect / verify existing conditions, provide construction support, provide repair recommendations, etc.
- Providing assistance and direction to the design team to produce drawings suitable for bidding and construction purposes
- Reviewing fabrication drawings, requests for information (RFI), and other construction submittals for conformance with engineering drawings, requirements, and specifications
- Some travel (10%) to other Client sites in Alabama, Pennsylvania, and within Virginia may be necessary
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from a four (4) year accredited college or university
- Minimum 5 years’ experience required in a similar role at a chemical plant or similar industrial facility (power plant, refinery, paper/pulp, pharmaceutical, etc...)
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) License (ability to obtain PA and VA licenses)
- Strong understanding of ACI, AISC, ASCE, IBC, OSHA, and PIP codes and regulations
- Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis without sponsorship
- Strong communication skills, the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Ability to work independently and in a multi-functional team environment
- Experience in 3D modeling utilizing software such as AutoCAD and/or CADWorx Structure software to create 3D models and drawings
- Experience with design software, such as Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis, STAAD, RISA, GT STRUDL, etc.
This role is primarily office-based, with work performed on a computer. However, fieldwork is required as needed for each project. Field activities may involve walking, climbing ladders, stairs, and platforms to take measurements or verify conditions within an active chemical plant. Fire-resistant uniforms are provided, and certain areas may require additional PPE, such as acid suits and face shields.
