Phlebotomist / Certified Phlebotomist – Part Time – Jennie Stuart Health, Hopkinsville, KY

The Phlebotomist promotes excellent public relations for the department and maintains patient confidentiality while performing a variety of laboratory duties, including phlebotomy, drug screens, and sample processing.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a positive morale and professional relationship with coworkers.

  • Promote good public relations while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Recognize how phlebotomy duties relate to overall laboratory and hospital function.
  • Abide by hospital dress code and arrive promptly for the designated shift.
  • Keep a clean and safe working environment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to assess situations, consider alternatives, and choose appropriate action.
  • Show confidence in learning new routines and methods.
  • Assume responsibility for continuing education as required by certifying agency.
  • Set priorities and obey policies regarding patient care and biohazard procedures.
  • Perform duties independently with little or no direct supervision.
  • Practice safety by using PPE (lab jackets, gloves, etc.) and maintaining a sanitized phlebotomy tray.
  • Greets patients courteously using AIDET.
  • Use two patient identifiers when collecting specimens and verify correct patient information.
  • Wash hands before and after each patient contact.
  • Apply proper technique for obtaining blood samples and label them immediately.
  • Dispose of used needles properly, avoiding recapping and using safety devices.
  • Order tests in HIS correctly and follow up with supervisors on ambiguous orders.
  • Receive drop‑offs, check paperwork, and sign samples into the laboratory.
  • Use time between collections for clerical work, assisting technical staff, and maintaining supplies.
  • Seek assistance for patients presenting difficulties and report issues after two unsuccessful attempts.
  • Complete routine blood sample collections within five minutes and difficult cases within fifteen minutes.
  • Finish scheduled procedures without compromising quality of work.
  • Follow up on tests or procedures left from a previous shift and report incomplete assignments.
  • Adapt to schedule changes, prioritize work, and handle STAT orders efficiently.
  • Stay informed about needles, anticoagulants, special handling, and test preparation.
  • Assist in orientation of new staff and training of students.
  • Report changes in a patient’s condition and perform ancillary duties as assigned.
  • Limit personal telephone calls and perform other duties as necessary.
Qualifications
  • Required Skills
    • High school graduate or equivalent.
    • Completion of a recognized phlebotomy, medical office, or related program (preferred).
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Excellent customer‑relationship skills.
    • Attention to detail and strong concentration.
    • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, ever‑changing environment.
  • Minimum Experience
    • A minimum of one year work experience as a phlebotomist or medical assistant (preferred).
  • Physical Requirements
    • Sitting, walking, standing frequently.
    • Bending, climbing, kneeling, twisting occasionally.
    • Lifting 25–50 lbs occasionally; >50 lbs occasionally.
    • Pushing frequently.
    • Must be able to see and hear clearly; corrective eyewear and hearing aids are acceptable.
    • Must be able to grasp and fine‑manipulate with one or both hands.
When Assigned as Charge Phlebotomist
  • First point of contact for the phlebotomy department when the supervisor is absent.
  • Oversee phlebotomy workflow to ensure timely sample collection.
  • Resolve workflow interruptions and document issues for management.
  • Report issues beyond scope to the charge tech and ensure all uncollected reports are processed.
  • Ensure temperature/refrigerator checks are performed on schedule.
  • Reports to:

    Phlebotomy Supervisor, Laboratory Manager, Director of Laboratory Services, Medical Director.
  • Shift/work hours:
    Variable with on‑call responsibilities.
