Job SummaryThe Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Laboratory Technician must promote good public relations for the department and Jennie Stuart Medical Center while maintaining patient/customer confidentiality. Testing personnel are responsible for performing the examination of materials or specimens taken from the human body to provide information or materials for use in the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of a disease or the assessment of a medical condition.
This includes the pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical phases of such examinations. Expected to comply with the direction of the Section Supervisor in the department assigned. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served: neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric. The Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist applies and implements the philosophy, goals, and objectives of Jennie Stuart Medical Center.
Functions
- Maintain active certification with certifying agency (ASCP, AAB, etc.).
- Maintain a positive morale and positive working relationship with coworkers.
- Maintain professional manner at all times; accept and profit from constructive criticism.
- Work as part of a team; perform duties willingly and with initiative, share information in effective communication, treat others with consideration, courtesy and respect, remain calm, work effectively in stressful situations, and demonstrate proper judgment and tact.
- Promote good public relations for the department and JSMC while maintaining patient/customer confidentiality.
- Abide by hospital and departmental dress code.
- Promptly arrive for designated shift.
- Maintain clean and safe working environment.
- Demonstrate ability to assess the situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate action.
- Demonstrate confidence in learning new routines and methods.
- Assume responsibility for continuing education requirement as required by certifying agency.
- Demonstrate ability to set priorities.
- Obey JSMC policies and procedures regarding patient care, with special attention to biohazard procedures.
- Perform duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision.
- Always practice and support safety in the workplace by using PPE (lab jackets, gloves, etc.).
- Demonstrate competence in all procedures required in accordance with policy.
- Ensure supplies are available and notify appropriate personnel when low.
- Perform laboratory testing as assigned and authorized, per protocols/procedures.
- Perform testing in a timely manner.
- Maintain standards in STAT, Timed, ASAP, and Routine testing.
- Write legibly and accurately, with complete documentation.
- Document quality control procedures performed, as per policy.
- Document preventative maintenance performed.
- Investigate abnormal results.
- Correlate test results with diagnosis and question incompatible results.
- Correlate laboratory methods, procedures, and patient test results with age‑specific population criteria.
- Call critical results to caregiver within timeframe established.
- Complete work assigned during shift and leave minimal amount for next shift without sacrificing quality of care.
- Follow through on tests or procedures left from a previous shift.
- Recognize and perform duties which need to be performed, although not directly assigned.
- Complete all mandatory in‑service and Health Stream education requirement before deadline.
- Assist in orientation of new staff members as necessary.
- Assist in training of students as necessary.
- Utilize slow times to departmental advantage by filling in with office/clerical work, assisting other staff, performing general household duties, putting away supplies, and other departmental tasks and continually use time to department advantage.
- Perform proficiency testing as assigned.
- Limit personal telephone calls.
