HIM Senior Specialist - St Vincent Hot Springs Hospital

Job SummaryThis position is responsible for providing HIM support in maintaining the Department’s paper and electronic health record system. The HIM Specialist Sr will have an understanding of privacy and security guidelines related to patient information and maintain HIPAA as well as keep all patient information confidential. The key duties of this position rely heavily on the ability to learn, and navigate efficiently within, an electronic health record.
The incumbent must be able to communicate both orally and in writing clearly and effectively in the English language; able to work in a fast‑paced environment; and develop sound professional working relationships. This position is responsible for advanced functions within the Health Information Management Department.
- Document Imaging:
Prepping, Scanning, Quality Review/Validation/Indexing (Pages/Hour) - Document Chart Analysis:
Analyze medical records for completion; assign and reassign provider deficiencies as needed in accordance with regulatory guidelines and facility‑timely completion policy. - Support Missing Documentation and Provider Queries as needed.
- Complete birth and/or death certificates in accordance with state law.
- Chart Pick up (Rounding) and Reconcilation.
- Perform Data Integrity duties (chart correction, duplicate medical record, etc.).
- Meet productivity expectations and maintain productivity metrics.
- Assist internal and outside agencies with information regarding patient records, prioritizing requests appropriately.
- Answer phones, process continuity of care requests, record retrieval, record filing as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Proficiency in keyboard operations, Microsoft Office and other required software.
- Customer orientation – establish and maintain long‑term customer relationships.
- Privacy and security – understanding of importance of patient information protection.
- Vital statistics – birth certificate and paternity acknowledgment.
- Organization – establish courses of action to ensure efficient work, proactive prioritization, and multitasking.
- Quality orientation – attention to all aspects of the job, accurate process checks.
- Work independently – self‑supporting, independent completion of tasks.
- Minimum:
High School diploma or equivalent. - Preferred:
Two (2) years’ experience in a hospital Health Information Management Department.
- Preferred: RHIT or RHIA Certification.
- Ability to sit for extended periods.
- Must efficiently use computer keyboard and mouse.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Pleasant inside environment.
- Light physical effort.
- Intense mental concentration; stress.
- Exposure to infectious conditions and minor hazards such as muscle sprains, cuts, bruises.
- The ideal candidate will have previous Health Information Management experience.
