Patient Access Rep II - Days, CHI St Vincent Hospital

Responsible for duties in support of departmental efficiencies which may include, but are not limited to: performing scheduling, registration, patient pre‑admission and admission, reception and discharge functions. Must obtain complete and accurate patient demographic information. Must employ proper, compliant patient liability collection techniques before, during & after date of service.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Greeting patients following Conifer Standards of Care, providing world‑class customer service, completing full patient registration at date of service, adhering to financial & cash control policies & procedures, thoroughly explaining and securing Hospital & patient legal forms (Advance Directives, Conditions of services, Consent for treatment, Important Message from Medicare, EMTALA, etc.). Scan Protected Health Information and create/file patient information packets/folders for upcoming Hospital services.

    May also assist with scheduling diagnostic procedures.
  • Educating patients about patient financial liabilities, employing proper, compliant collection techniques before, during & after date of service, performing Hospital cash reconciliation & secured payment entry in adherence to policies & procedures.
  • Securing medical necessity checks/verification per CMS, verifying insurance, benefits, coverage & eligibility, completing registration financial clearance worklists, obtaining insurance authorizations for scheduled & unscheduled services, and securing inpatient visit notifications to payors. May also assist with scheduling and coordinating post‑discharge care.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Minimum typing skills of 35 wpm
  • Working knowledge of PC/CRT/printer
  • Knowledge of hospital environment preferred
  • Customer service skills and experience
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Understanding of Third Party Payor requirements preferred
  • Understanding of Compliance standards preferred
  • Capable of performing duties in at least two Patient Access service areas including Emergency Department
  • Use proper negotiation techniques to collect money owed
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external clients
  • Interpret physician orders, medical terminology, and insurance cards while maintaining Conifer Standards of Care
Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 0–1 year in a Customer Service role.
  • 0–1 year of administrative experience in medical facility, health insurance, or related area preferred.
  • Some college coursework preferred.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to sit at computer terminal for extended periods.
  • Resolve Physician's office and Patient issues; may experience extreme patient volumes.
  • Occasionally lift/carry items up to 25 lbs.
  • Frequent prolonged standing, sitting, and walking.
  • Occasionally push a wheelchair to assist patients.
Work Environment
  • Hospital administration setting.
  • Can work in patient care locations, potentially exposed to life‑threatening conditions.
Other
  • Must be available to work hours and days as needed based on departmental/system demands.
