Summary

Positions are located at Hot Springs National Park. The primary purpose is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbents utilize journeyman to master level knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts.

Duties

The primary function of these positions is the oversight and maintenance of all park HVAC systems to ensure property operation.

Additional Duties
  • Perform simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment, and related utilities, particularly electrical and plumbing.
  • Assist other maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
  • Perform minor carpentry repairs using hand tools, such as replacing broken planks on picnic tables or broken windows, and adjusting or replacing hinges, latches, and catches.
  • Perform minor painting with brush and roller on projects where appearances are not critical, such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels.
  • Operate a light truck to pick up supplies and transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.
  • Make minor repairs as needed, referring problems to higher‑graded workers.
  • Operate a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment.
Cut‑off Dates

This is an open continuous announcement; applications are collected over several months and have multiple cut‑off dates. Applications will be considered through the open period of the announcement.
INITIAL CUT OFF is Monday 12/29/2025. Additional referral certificates will be issued when a hiring official exhausts current certification and/or additional vacancies need to be filled.

Requirements

Conditions of employment include:

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Driver’s License:
    May be required to operate a vehicle as part of official duties.
  • Uniform:
    Must wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Minimum age restrictions:
    Applicants must be at least 18 years old or meet high school graduation/Vocational training/appropriate enrollment criteria, with additional details in the original posting.
Qualifications

Applicants must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job‑related factors:

  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Knowledge of materials.
  • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Use of measuring instruments.
SCREEN OUT

Minimum Qualifications:

Perform most of the work as a Maintenance Mechanic at the journeyman level with a high level of independence in at least two of the following trades:
Masonry, Electrical, Plumbing, Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic, Utilities Systems Repair‑Operator, and/or Engineering Equipment Operator.

Volunteer Experience

Volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations is credited toward qualifications.

Education

No substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands

Physical effort is heavy to moderate, requiring occasional lifting of 50–100 pounds, standing, climbing ladders or scaffolding, and working in awkward positions.

Working Conditions

Work may be encountered outdoors in temperatures ranging from
-40 to 90+ degrees, with exposure to dust, dirt, wind, rain, chemicals, and machinery hazards. Appropriate safety equipment must be worn and safety regulations adhered to.
