Position: Seasonal Laborer (Motor Vehicle Operating)

Seasonal Laborer (Motor Vehicle Operating)

The primary purpose of the position is to perform laboring duties that require moderately heavy physical effort using common hand tools and power equipment. The incumbent must also operate light‑duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds (such as pick‑up trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, etc.) to transport personnel, material, or equipment to work sites located on the park.

Duties
  • Operate heavy power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, brush chippers, portable snow blowers, and all types of hand and light power tools to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, and trails.
  • Load and unload supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc.; move furniture; remove and set signs; paint picnic tables and signs; rake and water lawns; trim trees and shrubbery; pick up litter; clean and repair fire pits.
  • Digs ditches and trenches with pick and shovel where soil is hard and compact; break up pavement, soil, or concrete; mix and pour concrete, asphalt, and hot/cold mix; fill and level holes in damaged roads; move heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks; operate heavy‑type power mowers; cut trees and heavy vegetation with axe, chainsaw, or powered brush cutters; stack heavy logs, lumber, and sacks of cement.
  • Perform janitorial duties for buildings and grounds when required.
  • Operate and perform minor operator maintenance on light‑duty motor vehicles such as pick‑up trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew‑cab pick‑ups; drive on specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules and routes at low speeds under limited traffic conditions.

This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Applicants will be referred periodically throughout the announcement period. Final application disposition will be completed once all positions have been filled or the announcement reaches the end of the open period stated in the announcement. The first cut‑off date is 11:59 p.m. EST, January 12, 2026. Initial consideration will be given to candidates whose applications have been received before the first cut‑off date.

Qualification requirements must be met for those applications submitted by the first cut‑off date.

Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Direct Deposit:
    Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Vehicle Operation:
    You may be required to complete training and operate a four‑wheel drive vehicle.
  • Uniform:
    You may be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Government Housing:
    Housing may be available at Wind Cave, Theodore Roosevelt, and Jewel Cave. Housing is NOT available at George Rogers Clark, Hopewell Culture, Knife River, Pea Ridge, or Tallgrass Prairie.
