Overview

The Seasonal Motor Vehicle Operator position supports maintenance and repair of roadsides, including roads, culverts, bridges, guardrails, and related infrastructure. The role requires operating heavy commercial motor vehicles (gross vehicle weight 26,000–32,000 pounds) and performing operator maintenance, custodial duties, and associated manual labor. A valid commercial driver’s license (Class A, Type A or higher) and a U.S. driver's license are required.

The position is subject to pre‑employment drug testing and background investigation.

Responsibilities
  • Operate diesel and gasoline powered motor vehicles, including dump trucks, trash trucks, and front‑end loaders, in all weather and terrain conditions.
  • Perform road maintenance tasks such as crack sealing, asphalt patching, refuse and recycling collection, and material transport.
  • Operate tractors equipped with flail and sickle bar mowers to cut brush along park roads.
  • Conduct operator maintenance on all vehicles, completing minor repairs and preventive maintenance per manufacturer and park standards.
  • Perform manual labor tasks, including digging, raking, cleaning drainage ditches, and litter pick‑up.
Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • U.S. background investigation with favorable adjudication.
  • Compliance with Selective Service Registration Act (for males).
  • Authorized to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Pre‑employment and random drug testing compliance.
  • Valid driver’s license and submission of a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record.
  • Current, valid Class A, Type A (or higher) Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Ability to wear and comply with National Park Service uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to operate heavy vehicles up to 26,000 pounds with safe handling and monitoring of mechanical condition.
  • Experience performing routine operator maintenance, including fluid checks, tire pressure monitoring, and equipment servicing.
  • Ability to work independently under normal supervision with strong reliability and dependability.
  • Experience with custodial or janitorial duties is an asset.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment in all weather and traffic conditions.
  • Knowledge of operating instructions, specifications, and safety protocols related to mobile equipment.
  • Strong work ethic and organizational skills (maintaining clean and orderly equipment and vehicles).
Physical Demands

Moderate physical effort is required for operating, turning, backing, and controlling large vehicles. Workers must frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds and occasionally perform emergency repairs such as tire changes and mechanical fixes on open highways.

Working Conditions

Assignments are performed outdoors in extreme temperature variations and in all traffic environments. Workers are exposed to the risk of serious accidents while operating heavy vehicles on public roads.

Salary

Salary does not include locality pay. For specific wage information refer to the OPM Salaries and Wages website. The position is open continuous; the initial cutoff date is Monday, January 5, 2026.
