The Role

The Interim Head of Finance/Finance Director will drive the financial performance of the Durham Division and serve as a key member of the senior management team. The role supports the Managing Director in achieving the agreed business plan and sustainable, profitable growth and requires broad operational knowledge to critically review and challenge decisions across all disciplines.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Develop the business plan with other functional heads and ensure alignment with the Group’s strategic objectives.
  • Own and deliver the division’s budget and forecast, maintaining accuracy and managing key metrics such as ROCE, WIP and cash.
  • Review and challenge proposed land acquisitions, focusing on financial assumptions and VAT.
  • Act as the primary contact for divisional HR, payroll, IT and fleet issues, supporting the Group and leading the Divisional finance team.
  • Ensure compliance with the Group Accounting Manual and manage the interim and year‑end process with external auditors to obtain sign‑off.
  • Oversee all month‑end processes and provide timely management information to the divisional team and Group.
  • Manage treasury functions, ensuring accurate monthly and daily cash‑flow forecasts and adherence to the Prompt Payment Code.
  • Accurately and timely complete returns to the Group, including annual, half‑annual, trading updates, budgets, pay reviews, bonus calculations, National Statistics and prompt payments.
  • Hold overall responsibility for all Division taxes, including VAT, CIS, payroll taxes, corporation tax and residential property developer tax.
  • Forecast valuation revenues with the Sales Director for quarterly valuations, reviewing costs and risks and challenging Commercial and Construction Directors.
  • Carry out any other reasonable tasks directed by the Managing/Regional Director or the Group Finance Management Team.
Experience, Qualification and Skills
  • Considerable post‑qualified experience in the industry, covering accounting, financial control and commercial finance/business partnering.
  • Experience must include financial and management accounting, leading month‑end closes, working with external auditors, providing analysis, profit and loss and cash‑flow forecasting, and supporting businesses in optimal operational decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully leading and developing a team.
  • Experience in a similar role preferred.
  • Working knowledge of COINS is desirable.
Qualifications and Training
  • CA, AACA or CIMA qualification.
  • Current full UK driving licence.

The Role and Working Conditions

Office based, with regular travel to developments within the divisional region.

Fixed term – 12 months.

Willingness to work flexibly and outside office hours as required.

Role subject to basic DBS and financial pre‑employment checks.
