There’s more to working in construction than meets the eye. As a Highway Maintenance Engineer for your local council you’ll be providing technical advice and support on everything from flood management to street lighting.

What you’ll do

It’s your job to provide expert advice to make sure the council’s statutory duties and policies on highways are implemented and enforced. You’ll work with a range of internal, external customers and partners as part of a specialist team.

A typical day might include:

  • Making visits to construction sites and other locations with occasional weekend and overnight work.
  • Inspecting the condition of highways including roads, bridges and drainage systems.
  • Planning and delivering small to medium-sized projects that provide service solutions.
  • Preparing and presenting reports and technical briefing papers.
  • Providing specialist advice and guidance on technical aspects of highway management.
  • Who you are

    A confident communicator who’s able to manage their own workload. You’ll have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to supervise and develop a team.

    Ideally you’ll have:

  • Practical experience, backed by evidence of appropriate specialist knowledge.
  • Authoritative knowledge of the specialist area.
  • Good persuasion and influencing skills.
  • Experience of planning work activities within general professional guidelines and/or council’s policies.
  • Knowledge of appropriate software packages including in-house systems.
