About the Role
The Business Personal Property Accountant will take ownership of preparing, filing, and managing Business Personal Property (BPP) tax returns for commercial clients. As the first dedicated hire for this function, you will help establish structure, processes, and standards for a growing area of the business. This role is ideal for someone with hands-on BPP experience who thrives in a role with autonomy, responsibility, and room to help shape a function.
What You’ll Do
• Prepare and file Business Personal Property (BPP) tax returns, primarily for Texas jurisdictions.
• Identify, classify, and value taxable personal property (computers, equipment, furniture, etc.).
• Track deadlines, required documentation, and assessor correspondence.
• Coordinate with a Chicago-based lead attorney and Houston administrative staff.
• Build structure and processes for a newly established in-house BPP function.
What We’re Looking For
• 3+ years of hands-on experience preparing or supporting BPP tax returns.
• Strong understanding of BPP valuation and state/local filing requirements.
• Highly organized with strong attention to detail and deadline management.
• Comfortable working independently and collaborating across locations.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
Nice to Have
• Experience filing BPP returns in Texas
• Familiarity with PTMS or similar BPP software
• Experience in commercial property tax or professional services environments
Work Environment
• Houston-based role with regular onsite presence
• Fast-paced and deadline-driven
• Occasional extended hours during peak filing periods
• Collaborative team dynamic with a close-knit internal culture
Compensation & Benefits
• Base Salary: $65,000 – $85,000, depending on experience
• Approximately 17 paid holidays
• 3 weeks of PTO to start
