DeBakey Veterans Affair Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, Texas is seeking a full‑time physician to serve as the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Care Line Executive and be responsible for the successful performance of the SCI Care Line, specifically with regard to customer satisfaction, quality of services provided, and efficiency of service delivery.

Location and Availability

Houston, Texas – MEDVAMC in Houston, Texas

Work Schedule:

Monday‑Friday, 8:00‑4:30 pm with on‑call nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Incumbent directs all clinical and administrative activities of the SCI Care Line, including budget and fiscal management, human resources management, strategic planning, and program management and evaluation.
  • Participates in top management discussions, decisions, policy‑making, and provides program direction to other executives, managers, and assigned personnel.
  • Monitors expenditures and proposes reallocation of funds based on shifting program needs.
  • Provides program direction and guidance to subordinate staff, effectively delegating authority and responsibility needed to carry out assigned tasks.
  • Manages quality assurance, practices lean management, and guarantees improvement activities for all programs.
  • Assigns work, evaluates performance, solves problems related to the work supervised, and determines long‑range manpower requirements.
  • Assesses/evaluates adult patients in inpatient and outpatient settings, including Telehealth modality.
  • Performs History & Physical examinations.
  • Conducts SCI/Rehab consultations, including prescription of orthotics, prosthetics, wheelchairs, adaptive equipment, and exoskeleton devices.
  • Requests consultations from other VA services and makes referrals to non‑VA care.
  • Orders and interprets routine diagnostic tests to establish diagnoses.
  • Plans, coordinates, and executes treatment plan.
  • Has authority to admit to SCI service.
  • Provides health maintenance and preventative care.
  • Provides patient education.
  • Provides trainee supervision and education.
Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship.
  • Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (ACGME, AOA, or equivalent).
  • Board‑certified in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Outstanding professional ability in the practice of medicine or a medical specialty.
  • Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain, including medical practice, professional standards, personnel issues, and quality and performance improvement.
  • Preferred experience:

    3‑5 years of clinical experience in SCI and at least 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • Physical requirements:

    light lifting (under 15 pounds), reaching above the shoulder, use of fingers, both hands and legs required, repeated bending, rapid mental and muscular coordination, near vision correctable to 3–4 Jäger, far vision to 20/20–20/40, hearing without aid, mental and emotional stability, work with detergents, exposure to constant noise, machinery, and ability to work closely or alone.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Competitive salary – annual performance bonus and regular salary increases.
  • Paid Time Off: 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and 5 days paid absence for CME).
  • Retirement:
    Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.

    Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care (many federal programs can be carried into retirement).
  • Licensure:
    One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory.
  • CME:
    Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full‑time with board certification).
  • Malpractice:
    Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.
  • Contract:

    No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
