Scholar-in-Residence - Creative Writing Program

, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, announces a nine‑month, non‑tenure track, post‑graduate fellowship in Creative Writing for the 2026‑27 academic year. The award is open to any practice in Creative Writing (Fiction, Poetry, Nonfiction). Candidates must reside in Houston for the duration of the residency and will work alongside faculty while vigorously pursuing creative/scholarly activities.

Salary: $45,000 annually. A $1,250 budget is available toward a project. The appointment carries a 1/1 teaching load, is not benefits‑eligible, and may be renewed for a second year.
- Meet regularly with the Director of the Center and other Scholars (Music, Theatre/Dance, Curatorial, Visual Arts) to align activities with the goals and vision of the CWMCA.
- Teach one course per semester in the Creative Writing Program, and/or in the IARTS curriculum as discussed with Directors of Creative Writing and the Mitchell Center.
- Pursue interdisciplinary research and collaborative projects with faculty, students, and other campus schools.
- Terminal degree (MFA or PhD in Creative Writing) in hand at the start of the fellowship.
- Interdisciplinary practice or research in at least two artistic disciplines, or clear interdisciplinary research interests to pursue during residency.
- Willingness to engage with the mission of the Mitchell Center and collaborate across artistic disciplines.
- Eligible for a criminal history check.
- Cover letter discussing how interdisciplinary practice informs your work and how the residency will expand your practice.
- Interdisciplinary arts class proposal and sample syllabus engaging Houston arts.
- Narrative of teaching evaluations or a letter from a Creative Writing professor.
- Curriculum Vitae.
- Sample creative work—up to 15 pages of prose or five poems.
