Instructor, Cosmetology (Part Time) – Adjunct at Inside Higher Ed

Summary
Provide expertise and knowledge that supports the college curriculum and programs. Establish courses following higher‑education standards, teach students using a variety of effective methodologies, and provide engagement and support activities that encourage learning. The instructional faculty role includes teaching, academic advising, professional development, and institutional and community service.

The incumbent may teach a maximum load of contact hours per week each semester in areas of competency and participate as a part‑time instructor in departmental, division, and college activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaching:
    • Demonstrate skill and knowledge in teaching the discipline.
    • Continuously improve instruction through innovative methodologies and delivery methods.
    • Develop and use a syllabus for each course in line with college, discipline, and departmental guidelines; submit one copy to the department chair.
    • Plan and use innovative teaching methods and materials that help students meet course objectives and accommodate diverse learning styles.
    • Evaluate students’ progress toward stated objectives and inform them in a timely manner.
    • Keep accurate student records and submit related reports on time.
    • Recommend student textbooks and learning materials.
    • Teach courses at various times and locations as needed by the institution and program.
    • Use equipment and facilities responsibly; assist with routine maintenance of instructional laboratories.
    • Demonstrate competence and interest in technology integration and willingness to explore new instructional methodologies.
    • Submit all grades, attendance rosters, and other required items by the stipulated deadlines.
  • Academic Advising:
    • Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community.
    • Provide access through office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.
    • Offer advice and assistance regarding instructional or program‑specific issues.
    • Make presentations on the academic field, including transfer and career opportunities, special clubs, support services, and scholarships.
    • Assist the chair/program director with advising activities as needed.
  • Professional Development:
    • Establish annual objectives for growth in consultation with the department chair.
    • Keep pace with developments in the discipline.
    • Learn and apply innovative technologies supporting student learning.
    • Participate in the evaluation process for oneself, the department, and the college.
  • Institutional and Community Service:
    • Participate in scheduled institutional services including opening week events, conference days, and commencement.
    • Participate in discipline or program meetings and activities.
    • Attend department, college, or system meetings and/or committees.
    • Adhere to all HCCS policies and procedures.
    • Participate in college‑related activities such as student services, faculty selection, community education, recruitment, and special programs.
    • Engage in business or community activities that support HCCS mission and accreditation standards.
    • Assist in the planning process by helping formulate departmental objectives, goals, and budget priorities.
    • Review, evaluate, and revise program curricula to ensure compliance with professional standards and industry guidelines.
    • Assist in articulation of courses and programs with secondary and post‑secondary institutions.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must meet the above duties and possess the following qualifications.

Education
Associate degree or higher required. Transcript confirming the degree and certification in specialty programs (eyelash extensions, nails, and esthetics) must accompany the application.

Experience
3 years’ experience as a salon operator required. 5 years preferred. 1 year teaching experience in cosmetology or a secondary school preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
