Summary:
The Dean of Student Life is an engaged, effective, and highly visible leader. The Dean of Student Life serves as a role model to Upper School students as they strive to incorporate the Sacred Heart Goals & Criteria into their lives and encourages students in their personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom. He/she fosters positive relationships and trust with and among the students, communicates the School’s mission, oversees the planning and direction of community events, develops student leadership training and opportunities, and oversees student discipline and accountability.
Primary Responsibilities:- Meet regularly with the Head of Upper School, Academic Deans, College Advisors, Learning Specialists, and Counselor to address school and student issues.
- Organize and plan all things pertaining to Upper School Students outside of the classroom, including events during school hours and outside of school hours.
- Determine and carry out discipline that is restorative, growth-focused, and aligned with the School’s mission.
- Work with the Head of Upper School to plan the Upper School Calendar.
- Work closely with Middle School Dean and Head of Lower School to coordinate activities and procedures across the divisions.
- Attend monthly and yearly all-school calendar meetings.
- Attend Grade 9 Welcome, Back to School Night, Grade Level Parent Coffees, and other parent informational events, as needed.
- Independently plan New Student Orientation Sleepover, school dances, pep rallies, Ring Ceremony, Graduation, and other annual school-wide celebrations.
- Organize and manage division Instagram account with the Communications department.
- Participate in the Admissions process including 8th grade visits, Open House, in-action tour groups, and the Admissions Committee.
- Work closely with Department Chairs where applicable.
- Propose and oversee the Extracurricular and Class budgets.
- Communicate with parent room volunteers for each grade level.
- Plan and coordinate Upper School daily community events and all-school events such as Conge.
- Oversee student clubs and work with faculty club moderators.
- Plan and conduct Upper School Assemblies with music director and Head of Upper School.
- Assist Campus Ministry with Social Awareness including on-campus and off-campus service and service projects.
- Supervise break, detention, lunch-time visitors, and senior off-campus privileges.
- Moderate student government and weekly activities led by Upper School students.
- Oversee class election meetings, activities, and fundraisers with class moderators.
Minimum Education /Prior Experience/Qualifications Required
- Master’s degree preferred
- Experience in a 9 – 12 environment, preferably in independent schools
- Strong references to convey abilities
- Excellent communication skills with all constituencies which are prompt and personal
- Highly organized with attention to detail
- High competency in and deep desire for fostering positive growth and development of Upper School students through leadership opportunities, learning from mistakes, and in all contributions to student life
- High level of competence using technology
- Ability to maintain accurate records
- Successful completion of fingerprint-based background check and sexual offender registry information.
- Completion of CMG Safe Environment Training
- Current CPR certification
- Overtly support and act in accordance with the Goals and Criteria of the Society of the Sacred Heart; this expectation includes attendance at and applicable participation in faith-based practices.
- Foster a safe, predictable, and supportive environment.
- Interact with colleagues in a respectful and collegial manner that contributes to a healthy school culture.
- Demonstrate appropriate planning and preparation and fulfill routine responsibilities in a thoughtful and timely manner.
- Uphold professional standards of personal presentation, professional courtesy, discretion, punctuality and attendance at all required meetings and events.
- Appropriately carry out specific duties as determined by the Head of School and/or supervisor.
