Summary
Provide the expertise and knowledge that support the Adult Education and Literacy curriculum and programs. Establish courses following accepted Texas Adult Education and Literacy Content standards, teach students using a variety of effective methodologies, and provide engagement and support activities that encourage student learning. The role of the Instructor encompasses teaching distance learning, academic advising, professional development, and institutional and community service.
Provide quality instruction to adult learners, integrating meaningful classroom activities and valuable experience that facilitate student learning goals and workforce training and employment skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide ABE activities and instruction across a continuum, from pre- and basic literacy through elementary levels, culminating with competencies equivalent to the eight-grade level. Instruction includes reading, mathematics, communication skills, social studies, physical sciences and health, Digital Literacy, and career and college readiness competencies; provide ASE activities comparable to secondary high school and college development education; help students earn the TxCHSE by successfully passing one of three tests (TASC, HiSET, GED) issued by TEA;
provide ESL activities supporting English Language Learners in achieving competence in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension; provide Integrated EL Civics instruction for adult English Language Learners; provide instruction in literacy, ESL, and civic participation rights; help students obtain postsecondary credentials valuable to local businesses; teach career and college planning; provide AEL instruction and activities alongside Workforce Preparation; offer distance learning;
teach financial literacy.

- Demonstrate skill and knowledge in teaching discipline.
- Continuously improve instruction quality using innovative methodologies.
- Use the AEL standard syllabus and departmental guidelines.
- Plan and use diverse teaching methods suitable for varying backgrounds and learning styles.
- Evaluate students and inform them of progress promptly.
- Maintain accurate records and submit reports on time.
- Teach courses at varied times and locations.
- Use equipment responsibly.
- Demonstrate competence and interest in classroom technology.
- Academic Advising
- Maintain professional relationships with students and colleagues.
- Provide access through office hours, electronic communication, and other methods.
- Offer advice on instructional or program-specific issues.
- Present academic fields, workforce programs, and transfer or work opportunities.
- Cooperate with Program Director on advising activities.
- Professional Development
- Set annual objectives for professional growth.
- Stay current in discipline developments.
- Learn technologies supporting student learning.
- Participate in evaluation processes.
- Complete four hours of New Employee Induction and two hours of classroom observation.
- Complete 15 PD hours, including adult learning principles and content-relevant hours.
- Institutional and Community Service
- Follow HCCS policies and procedures.
- Participate in accreditation-required activities.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
Education
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required. Texas Teaching Certificate preferred.
Experience
One (1) year of teaching experience required. Teaching experience with adult students in a multi-level setting preferred. Experience with diverse populations preferred. Curriculum development experience.
