School of Rock Summer Creek is hiring a high-level Drums Instructor to develop students from beginner through advanced and prepare them for live performance. This role is for experienced musicians and educators who run structured, intentional lessons, maintain high standards, and consistently drive measurable student progress.

The Role

You will coach students to become confident, versatile drummers by developing:

  • Proper drum technique, grip, posture, and movement
  • Strong timing, tempo, groove, and internal pulse
  • Coordination and independence between hands and feet
  • Rudiments, sticking patterns, rolls, accents, and control
  • Rock, pop, blues, funk, R&B, and other contemporary styles
  • Beats, grooves, fills, transitions, and song structures
  • Dynamic control, feel, articulation, and playing with intention
  • Reading drum notation, charts, and rhythmic notation
  • Ear training and the ability to learn songs efficiently
  • Improvisation and creative drum vocabulary
  • Playing to the song rather than simply playing the instrument
  • Listening and responding to bass, guitar, vocals, and the rest of the band
  • Rehearsal preparation, stage readiness, and professional performance habits
  • Confidence and musicianship for live performance

This is not a “just play songs” environment. We expect focused, outcome-driven instruction that builds real musicianship from first-time beginners to advanced players.

Core Responsibilities
  • Deliver high-quality, structured one-on-one drum lessons
  • Adapt teaching approach across beginner, intermediate, and advanced students
  • Develop strong timing, coordination, groove, technique, and musical awareness
  • Teach students to maintain a consistent tempo and play confidently with a click or backing track
  • Develop students' ability to support the song, listen to the band, and play appropriately for the musical situation
  • Teach students how to build effective grooves, fills, transitions, and arrangements
  • Prepare students for rehearsals, performances, and School of Rock shows
  • Set clear goals and assign weekly practice
  • Track and communicate student progress consistently
  • Collaborate with other instructors and school leadership
  • Help students develop the skills, confidence, and professionalism required to perform as part of a band
Non-Negotiables
  • On time = early (15 minutes before first lesson)
  • Same-day lesson notes, every lesson
  • Prepared, intentional lesson plans for every student
  • Professional, proactive communication with parents and staff
  • Maintain a focused, productive lesson environment
What Success Looks Like

Top instructors:

  • Show clear student progress within the first 60–90 days
  • Retain students through strong relationships and results
  • Consistently prepare students who are confident on stage
  • Develop students who can play effectively with other musicians
  • Teach students to develop strong timing, groove, and ensemble awareness
  • Help students build both technical ability and musical independence
  • Communicate proactively with families and leadership
Qualifications (Minimum Bar)
  • 5+ years performing and/or teaching drums
  • Strong foundation in drum technique, rhythm, timing, coordination, and musicality
  • Ability to teach beginner through advanced students
  • Strong understanding of rock, pop, blues, funk, R&B, and contemporary music
  • Strong sense of timing, groove, dynamics, and rhythmic fundamentals
  • Ability to teach beats, fills, rudiments, coordination, reading, and practical musical theory
  • Ability to teach students to play with a click/metronome and backing tracks
  • Proven ability to work with youth and varying skill levels
