General Description:

The Field Service Engineer role is a technical leadership position, specializing in the identification, analysis, overhaul, and repair of 2- and 4-stroke diesel engines and related equipment. This role operates with a high degree of autonomy and is responsible for leading service teams during overhauls, repair work, troubleshooting, and installations in both field and shop settings. The engineer will ensure the delivery of exceptional technical service and customer support, both internally and externally, adhering to stringent safety and quality standards.

As a senior member of the team, this individual is also tasked with mentoring junior engineers and technicians, enhancing team competence and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Lead field service operations, ensuring efficient execution
  • Evaluate safety hazards and prepare Job Safety Analysis (JSA) documentation.
  • Conduct safety briefings to ensure team awareness.
  • Coordinate with customer leads and crews during repairs.
  • Assign job duties to optimize team productivity.
  • Provide management with after action, rework, and team performance reports.
Responsibilities:
  • Plan and oversee 2- and 4-stroke engine service activities, including directing and prioritizing team efforts in rigging, cleaning, inspections, measurements, calibration, and mechanical assembly. Lead pre-job mobilization, tool preparation, and post-job demobilization, ensuring efficient recovery of company assets.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by handling calls, defining work scopes, assisting in service quote preparation, and maintaining effective communication with customer representatives, such as chief engineers, ship or plant superintendents, and service managers or coordinators. Ensure professionalism, integrity, and accountability in all interactions.
  • Review and interpret technical specifications such as manufacturers’ manuals, work instructions, work orders or customer purchase orders to plan all tooling requirements. Prepare parts and materials lists before job commencement, establish efficient work sequences, and assign schedules and tasks to crews.
  • Conduct pre-job safety meetings to ensure compliance with all company and customer safety standards. Regularly inspect work areas and equipment, provide safety training, and deliver tool-box safety talks and shift handover notes to maintain a secure working environment.
  • Direct the repair and overhaul of critical engine components, maintaining high-quality standards in cleaning and calibration. Perform skilled maintenance and repair operations using tools such as hand or power tools, and hydraulic equipment.
  • Supervise and train team members in accurately taking and recording fine metric measurements using various instruments like bore gauges, dial gauges, snap gauges, Vernier calipers, and deflection gauges. Ensure proper calibration and verify the completeness of all tooling and measurements.
  • Exercise independent judgment and reasoning to uphold the highest levels of quality and service delivery, adapting to changing circumstances and resolving challenges with professional discretion.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork, including daily time sheets, expense reports, service reports and measurement sheets. Ensure data completeness and accuracy for technical service report documentation, promoting accountability and transparency.
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule to meet job demands, demonstrating adaptability and commitment to meeting customer needs and project timelines. Communicate any changes effectively to team members and relevant stakeholders.
