Aurora Energy Services is hiring Field Service Engineers to test, energize and start up low- and medium-voltage switchboards, switch gear and power transformers on utility-scale solar, BESS, substation and data center projects. You will own equipment from pre-energization inspection through first energization and turnover, working from manufacturer startup procedures, single-line diagrams and project commissioning scripts.

  • Location: Houston or Abilene, TX (field-based, project travel)

  • Type: Temporary, full-time hours
Pay and benefits
  • Competitive hourly pay, based on experience
  • 40 hours a week guaranteed
  • Overtime at 1.5 times your hourly rate
  • Rotations and extended shifts during energization windows

Aurora is a Houston-based electrical field services company certified to ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001, and part of an international multi-disciplinary energy services group.

Key responsibilities

Switchboards and switch gear (LV and MV)

  • Perform pre-energization inspections: torque verification, bus and cable terminations, barriers, grounding, labeling and mechanical interlocks.
  • Conduct insulation resistance (megger), contact resistance (DLRO) and hi-pot testing on bus, breakers and cables.
  • Test, set and verify trip units and protective relays (overcurrent, ground fault, differential) against the coordination study.
  • Perform primary and secondary injection testing of LV power and molded-case breakers, and vacuum bottle integrity and timing tests on MV breakers.
  • Verify CT/PT ratios, polarity and wiring; perform point-to-point control wiring checks.
  • Functionally test controls, interlocks, transfer schemes (ATS/MTS), metering and SCADA/communication points.
  • Execute energization: phasing checks, voltage and rotation verification, and load verification.

Transformers (pad-mount, dry-type and liquid-filled substation)

  • Receive and inspect units: impact recorders, nitrogen pressure, nameplate, accessories and shipping damage.
  • Perform turns ratio (TTR), winding resistance, insulation resistance, polarization index and power factor/tan delta testing.
  • Test and verify tap changers (DETC/LTC), bushings, gauges, alarms, cooling fans and protective devices.
  • Pull oil samples for DGA and dielectric analysis where applicable.
  • Support transformer energization, including inrush monitoring and post-energization checks.

Documentation and coordination

  • Complete test reports and commissioning forms to NETA ATS and project specifications; flag deficiencies and track them to closure.
  • Coordinate with EPCs, OEM field service, utility representatives and owner's engineers on LOTO, switching orders and energization windows.
  • Lead or support crews of technicians and helpers; mentor junior staff.
Required qualifications
  • 3+ years of hands-on testing and startup of LV/MV switch gear, switchboards and power transformers.
  • Proficiency with common test sets: insulation testers, DLRO, TTR, winding resistance, and primary and secondary injection (Omicron, Doble, Megger SMRT/Freja or equivalent).
  • Ability to read and work from single-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams and relay settings files.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70E, NETA ATS and OSHA electrical safety requirements.
  • Experience with lockout/tagout and switching on energized systems up to at least 15 kV.
  • Clear, accurate test documentation habits.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass a background check and drug screen.
  • Ability to travel to project sites for extended periods.
Preferred qualifications
  • NETA Level II, III or IV certification (or NICET equivalent).
  • Utility-scale solar, BESS/PCS, substation or data center commissioning experience (Level 3 to 5 functional testing).
  • Relay testing experience with SEL, GE Multilin, Schneider or ABB relays,…
