Electronics Design Engineer - Space Exploration Electronic Systems

Are you passionate about human space exploration, understanding the origins of the universe, and working with a diverse team to make a difference? If so, we need you on our team to help us design and deliver systems that enable the exploration of space while benefiting people on Earth.

Responsibilities
  • Report directly to the Electronics and Electrical Section Manager and collaborate with a team of over 45 other Engineers.
  • Work on projects as a Team Lead or as an associated Electrical Engineer.
  • Support new designs from conception, analysis, and manufacturing through operational test and deployment.
  • Provide design support and guidance in various aspects of Electronics System Development.
  • Be familiar with NASA specifications for Electronics Component development.
  • Develop component test stand architectures and design electrical component and lab instrumentation test systems.
  • Develop and/or modify LabVIEW code for test systems and detailed test verification procedures.
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical technicians to build and test designed systems.
  • Develop and test breakout boxes and digital/analog sensor emulation systems.
  • Perform electrical evaluation and selection of instrumentation such as pressure transducers, flow meters, pumps, fans, RTDs, thermocouples, etc.
  • Troubleshoot and repair existing test systems.
  • Design analog and digital printed circuit boards for various application needs and work with an eCAD designer for PCB layouts.
  • Develop test software modules to perform specific tests.
  • Work in a laboratory environment following standard operating procedures.
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Master’s preferred) with 10‑15 years of related experience.
  • Prior experience leading teams of electronics design engineers.
  • Experience in requirements definition and architecture development.
  • Experience with analog, digital, and power PCB design, fabrication, and assembly.
  • Proficiency with electrical schematic entry and PCB layout tools such as Altium Designer and version control software like SVN.
  • Experience with cable design and fabrication for space applications.
  • Experience with JSC standards and processes.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems (National Instruments) and LabVIEW code development.
  • Experience with FPGA circuitry design and coding in VHDL (Xilinx FPGA using VIVADO).
  • Experience in microcontroller circuit design and embedded systems development, including design, build, testing, and embedded software environments.
  • Experience with requirements verification.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency may be required.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
Preferences
  • Programming experience in C/C++ and Python.
  • Experience with circuit simulation tools such as Pspice, OrCAD, Multisim.
  • Hands‑on experience with test hardware such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, function generators, electronic load banks, power supplies, and power analyzers.
  • Familiarity with data interface protocols and associated hardware such as Ethernet, RS232/RS422/RS485, I2C, SPI.
  • Prior experience in the design and test of analog instrumentation systems.

Additional Information

Physical requirements include sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time) and lifting up to 25 lbs. (5% of time). Standard office equipment such as PC, telephone, and printer will be used.
