CAA I is looking for a Space Vehicle Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) / Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Test Engineer to join the EMI / EMC Test and Analysis Team at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. Strong candidates will have academic backgrounds in a related field with significant professional experience in electromagnetics. As a member of the EMI / EMC team technical staff, the engineer will support a variety of current and future space vehicle assignments based on specific experience in the EMI / EMC field.
The selected candidate will serve as an EMI test director to plan and execute EMI tests for current, e.g., Orion, and future, e.g., Lunar Gateway, aerospace vehicles and systems. Other assignments will include electromagnetic related analyses of space vehicles or systems for EMC compliance.
A primary assignment will focus on the planning and execution of EMI tests of spacecraft systems. The new member of the team will participate in the definition, analysis, and test verification of EMI / EMC requirements for current and future space vehicles; analyses of electrical circuits for EMC, including grounding and shielding assessments; and the execution of electric and magnetic field measurements.
This position requires a self‑motivated, capable person with strong verbal and written communication skills. In addition to outstanding academic performance, the individual must be very people savvy, have strong customer relationship skills, possess a positive team‑player attitude, be flexible and willing to take on new assignments and responsibilities as they arise, and be an articulate speaker able to communicate complex technical ideas in a convincing manner.
The individual must share our passion for our Nation's Space Program and share in the excitement of developing the next generation of human‑rated space vehicles.
- Prepare test plans and procedures for evaluation of hardware components and systems for EMC compliance for both susceptibility and emissions. Assist in testing for electrostatic discharge susceptibility and magnetic field strength testing.
- Investigate EMC test discrepancies and anomalies, and perform failure investigations of electronic, communications, and RF system components and subsystems.
- Evaluate electromagnetic test results to determine the impacts of non‑conformances.
- Participate in design activities related to or impacted by electromagnetic environmental effects and make recommendations for action on highly complex technical problems.
- Participate in design reviews, customer acceptance reviews, test readiness reviews, and other program reviews. Develop review documentation, as needed. Perform electromagnetic analyses using software tools such as Math Cad or MATLAB.
- Perform data reduction of complex electromagnetic and radio frequency (RF) analyses, and signal integrity assessments.
- Assist with the design, implementation, and operation of the EMI Test Laboratory.
- Assist with the overall EMI Test Laboratory operating plans which include detailed schedules, consulting with customers and supporting information relative to EMI test operations.
- Evaluate the EMI performance of electrical and electronic systems and develop design change or tailoring recommendations.
- Evaluate electrical and electronic systems EMC specifications, test plans, and test procedures.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident for access to USG facilities.
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, or Physics, or related disciplines with a focus on electromagnetics.
- Minimum of 3 years of EMI/EMC design and test experience involving circuit theory and electromagnetic theories including Radio Frequency (RF) design, cable shielding, magnetics, antennas, and filters. Experience exceeding the minimum is valued.
- Knowledge of performing EMI/EMC tests such as…
