Job Summary
Murphy Exploration and Production seeks a technically capable and experienced Petrophysicist for the Houston office to support offshore exploration and development. The candidate should have a track record of verified petrophysical evaluations of deep‑water wells, support interdisciplinary technical projects, and plan and execute formation evaluation programs for deep‑water projects.
The role requires active participation within integrated teams and seamless interaction with geoscientists, reservoir engineers, operations staff, drilling and facilities engineers. Collaboration across these disciplines is essential. Strong organizational skills are crucial, as the position demands ownership of data management responsibilities and oversight of integrity and accuracy throughout each project. Excellent written and verbal communication abilities are required for conveying technical information to stakeholders.
The Staff Petrophysicist will work in the Houston Corporate office and may work up to two (2) days a week remotely, as business needs allow.
Responsibilities- Formation evaluation and development of petrophysical models for a variety of age reservoirs for offshore Gulf of America, Côte d'Ivoire, and other New Ventures opportunities.
- Actively participate with a multidisciplinary team that undertakes subsurface technical evaluations and reservoir characterization projects.
- Integration and calibration of core to wireline and LWD log data to provide volumetric determination, lithological determination, fluid contacts, and completions recommendations.
- Maintain and update the field‑specific petrophysical models, integrating and reconciling existing and future data from all subsurface disciplines.
- Maintain well data for exploration and development areas.
- Plan and execute formation evaluation programs and procedures for coring, wireline logging, data quality control, computer processing, and data management.
- Support all aspects of open hole log applications and interpretation of routine and advanced core analysis.
- Perform operational petrophysics while drilling, real‑time evaluation, collection of formation pressures, fluid samples, and rotary sidewall cores.
- Liaise with core analysis, coring, mud logging, wireline, and LWD companies and in‑house experts to verify operational procedures are executed with high standards of safety, quality, and best practices.
- Display strong organizational and communication skills, making evaluations, interpretations, and assessments available for integration by team members from assets.
- Champion petrophysical knowledge sharing/mentorship across the subsurface organization.
- Undertake petrophysical regional studies to support near‑field exploration and development teams in evaluating new basins/plays and improving reservoir characterization of strategic assets.
- Bachelor's degree in Geoscience or an Engineering discipline.
- Minimum 12 years of Petrophysical Engineering experience within the oil industry, a service company, or a producer.
- Deep water basin experience such as Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, or Atlantic Margins.
- Experience with petrophysical software packages;
Geolog, IP, or Techlog experience will be considered on a case‑by‑case basis. - Database management experience; must be willing to clean data, splice logs, and manage daily reporting and data transfer while drilling wells.
- Experienced in advanced methods of post‑core retrieval handling and analysis techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to design logging programs in deep‑water reservoir systems that are fit for purpose.
- Able to assist in building pore‑pressure predictions for pre‑drill modeling.
- Analysis of formation pressures and samples from wireline and LWD for fluid contacts, fluid type, and reservoir quality is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree preferred.
- Experience with pore pressure prediction.
- Multi‑mineral petrophysical interpretation skills.
- Image log processing and interpretation skills.
- NMR processing.
- Reservoir quality prediction software such as Touchstone.
- Unconventional experience is a plus.
