Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineer, Water Engineer
As a Drainage Design Engineer, you will apply hydrologic and hydraulic engineering principles to the planning, analysis, and design of drainage infrastructure for transportation and roadway improvement projects. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and under the guidance of senior engineers, you will contribute to the development of innovative and cost-effective stormwater management solutions, including storm sewer systems, culverts, open channels, detention and retention facilities, roadway drainage networks, and hydraulic structures.
In this role, you will perform drainage analyses, prepare engineering calculations, develop construction plans and technical reports, and support the evaluation of flood risks, watershed impacts, and regulatory compliance requirements. You will utilize industry-standard design software and modeling tools to assess system performance and ensure designs meet applicable federal, state, and local transportation agency standards, drainage criteria, and environmental regulations.
As your experience grows, you will take increasing ownership of project deliverables, coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, assist in resolving complex engineering challenges, and contribute to project planning and execution efforts. This position offers an excellent opportunity to strengthen technical expertise, develop sound engineering judgment, and build a successful career in transportation drainage design while delivering infrastructure solutions that enhance public safety, mobility, and system resilience.
WhatYou'll Do:
- Prepare and review drainage design plans, hydrologic and hydraulic calculations, and technical reports for transportation projects, including roadway, bridge, and culvert drainage systems.
- Apply applicable drainage design standards, criteria, and agency guidelines to ensure accuracy, compliance, and constructability in stormwater and roadway drainage designs.
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, storm sewer and culvert sizing, drainage modeling, cost estimates, and quantity takeoffs for assigned transportation drainage projects.
- Utilize industry-standard hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software to evaluate drainage system performance, assess flood risk, and develop effective stormwater management solutions.
- Support coordination with roadway, structural, environmental, and other multidisciplinary teams, as well as clients and reviewing agencies, to integrate drainage requirements into overall project design.
- Assist with quality assurance reviews, address drainage-related design comments, and provide technical support during plan development, agency reviews, and construction-related field inquiries.
- Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- 5-10 years of transportation drainage experience with TxDOT projects.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Proficiency in Microstation ORD, Auto Cad, and Civil3D software.
- Proposal writing/marketing experience is a plus.
- This hybrid job operates between an office environment and a field environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones and copy machines. May require occasional exposure to work environments that may include inclement weather, heat, humidity, noise, hazard, atmospheric conditions, and bodies of water, depending on project requirements.
- While performing the duties of this job, physical demands of the employee include frequent sitting, moving, standing, talking, hearing, and occasional balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling. This job may occasionally require operating a company vehicle, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 35 lbs.
