Writer – Narrative Designer
Alternate Games (Remote / Flexible)
Alternate Games is a disabled-led game development team creating games by disabled people, for disabled people. We believe lived experience is not a limitation—it’s a creative strength. We’re currently looking for a Writer / Narrative Designer to join us on an experimental, deeply personal project.
Our portfolio:
About the ProjectThis game is an experimental autobiographical narrative exploring life with schizophrenia. It is not a power fantasy or a recovery story wrapped in comfort. The experience is tragic, frightening, disorienting, and emotionally raw
, designed to communicate what it feels like to live inside psychosis, memory loss, paranoia, and fractured identity.
The game leans heavily on mood, voice, unreliable narration, and emotional truth over linear storytelling. It may be uncomfortable—and that is intentional.
What You’ll Do- Collaborate with the creative director to shape an autobiographical narrative into interactive form
- Write scenes, dialogue, internal monologue, and environmental storytelling
- Help translate lived experiences of schizophrenia into compelling, respectful gameplay narratives
- Work with designers to integrate story into mechanics, pacing, and level structure
- Revise and refine material based on feedback and accessibility needs
- Strong writing skills with a focus on dark, psychological, or experimental storytelling
- Comfort working with heavy themes mental illness, fear, grief, confusion, and trauma
- Ability to write fragmented, nonlinear, or unreliable narratives
- Experience with game writing, narrative design, or interactive fiction (professional or personal projects welcome)
- Disabled and/or neurodivergent applicants are strongly encouraged to apply
Lived experience with psychosis, schizophrenia, or severe mental health challenges is a plus, but not required.
What We Offer- A disabled-led, disability-affirming team environment
- Flexible schedules and async-friendly collaboration
- A project where your voice and perspective genuinely matter
- The chance to help create a game that challenges stigma and expands what games can say
Send us:
- A short introduction about yourself
- Writing samples (game writing, fiction, personal work, or experimental pieces all welcome)
- Optional: a brief note on why this project speaks to you
Alternate Games is committed to accessibility, respect, and creative honesty. If you’ve ever felt unseen by games—or wanted to make something that tells the truth—we’d love to hear from you.
