Position Overview
Join to apply for the DEPUTY ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (EXE LEV) role at the City of Houston. The Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) provides solid waste services to citizens through collection, disposal and recycling. This role leads a team of 110 workers and a 72‑vehicle fleet, overseeing an annual operating budget of $5 million and a disposal budget of $6 million to serve over 85,000 households.

Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM (subject to change).
At the direction of the Solid Waste Director, the Deputy Assistant Director will:
1) Lead, manage and direct managers and employees;
2) Train, develop and evaluate staff for succession planning;
3) Coordinate, implement and manage an annual operating budget;
4) Act as liaison to other departments, government agencies, and the private sector;
5) Respond to customer service requests;
6) Monitor and control the waste disposal stream for maximum efficiency and cost control.
Essentially a normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions.
Minimum RequirementsEducation: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
Experience: Seven years of progressively more complex administrative experience, with at least three years in a supervisory capacity. A Master’s degree may substitute two years of experience.
License: Valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston's driving policy.

- Major distributed on/processing operation (logistics)
- Manufacturing operation
- Major city service provision (Public Works, Health, DON, Parks)
- Bi‑lingual candidates with major languages (Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Hindi)
- Military Operations Officers or Senior Enlisted Non‑Commissioned Officers (pending/post retirement)
- Preference to eligible veteran applicants who possess the qualifications necessary for the duties, among the most qualified candidates, and in accordance with Executive Order 1‑6.
Selection/Skills Tests:
Department may administer skills assessment test.

Yes. Position subject to random drug testing; a promotional position requires a drug test and assignment test.
Salary information:
Factors include qualifications and pay rates of other employees. Pay grade: 30.
