OAG - Child Support | Child Support Officer II-III | 26-0190

Join the Office of the Attorney General’s Child Support Division (CSD) to support responsible parenting and ensure children receive needed support.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct detailed investigations to locate absent parents, verify employment, determine assets.
  • Assist in establishing paternity for children born out-of-wedlock.
  • Obtain and enforce court orders for child support and health care coverage.
  • Negotiate lump-sum payments and out-of-court settlements.
  • Monitor child‑support cases and refer delinquent cases for enforcement actions.
  • Document all case actions in the agency’s system (e.g., ChAMP, ECM).
  • Review and maintain virtual child‑support files for accuracy.
  • Assess case closure eligibility and attend court hearings as needed.
  • Research case information via computer systems.
  • Maintain knowledge of child‑support policies, Texas Family Law, federal regulations, and other states’ IV‑D regulations.
  • Explain program policies, procedures, and regulations to customers.
  • Respond to customer inquiries and resolve complaints about case status.
  • Assess validity of complaints against the IV‑D program impartially.
  • Serve as Notary Public and perform related duties.
  • Attend work regularly and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Comply with agency policies, including ethics and integrity.
Qualifications
  • For CSO II:
    High‑school graduation or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree acceptable; relevant experience may substitute one year of education per year of experience.
  • Knowledge of investigative practices and techniques.
  • Interviewing and negotiating skills.
  • Computer skills for word processing and data entry/retrieval.
  • Basic mathematical computation skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Sound judgment and decision‑making.
  • Positive response to feedback.
  • Cooperative teamwork in a professional office environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • In‑person presence required at OAG work location; ability to travel up to 15% of the time.
  • Comfortable lifting 30 lbs.
  • Typing 35 wpm (typing test required).
Additional Qualifications (CSO III)
  • All CSO II items plus one year of full‑time experience in child‑support program, credit collections, investigations, legal assistance, or IV‑A eligibility.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from accredited four‑year college or university.
  • Proficiency in Spanish (reading, writing, speaking).

Salary: $85,000 – $120,000 per year.
